    Oh. Dear. Christ.

    :D

Just seen the ad on TV. Hector, cammo gear, face paint, and a crossbow. Set up in a tree stand waiting on a deer.

    Should be, interesting.

In fairness the lad would need face paint, without it his face would probably reflect enough light to lamp a fox with or blind a deer!

Can you imagine it. In a tree, the deer slowly coming into range when all off a sudden a big, thick Navan accent starts belting out ..................

" How's it goin deer, Hector here."

There would be nothing within 5 miles of the mad fecker the minute he opens his mouth.

A quick preview of what will happen if he can stay quiet long enough to get a deer in close.....................

Can anyone explain why this type of hunting is banned in Ireland?? - surely something that sustained our ancestors before guns should be retained:confused:

PS: Maybe a licensed system to ensure people are properly trained in the art:)

From a personal view point i would imagine with the introduction of firearms you have a far more efficient, and with the different amount of bullet types, a far more effective method of dispatching the animal quickly, cleanly and humanely.

After saying that i have seen the many different types of arrows, bolts, etc available and would say they could (in the hands of a properly trained person) be as effective as a rifle, within a certain distance. This would explain the reason why firearms are used over the crossbow, but as to why its banned is something i cannot explain. Not enough experience or knowledge about crossbows or long bows for that matter to properly compare them to a rifle.

It may relate to poaching at a time we were overly friendly with our nearest neighbour :D

That is just a guess mind you.

A licensed system with a skills test to include blood tracking, accuracy, and so forth would be good.

Doesn't look like the hunting bit will be on tonight.

Yup, can be done.In THEORY.:D.Ever hear of a Hawaiian sling??Basically,a primitive type of spear gun. There is a survivalist type video[pathfinder I think?] on youtube of some lad that claims his for want of a better word.Black widow [or the US equivlent] catapult with some modifications can throw arrows out to 100 paces. The videos are impressive enough, but I'd like to see it in real life taking down a deer.

    @Birdnuts
As to why it isnt legal in Ireland ,bow or Xbow hunting.Proably because of ignorance of how it is done and the risk of every yahoo taking to the country with "weapons" that PTB have, and had no control over to shoot at deer.Put it like this,if there are idiots out there with legally held rifles trying to shoot deer and making a hames of it.How bad would it be with primitive weapons??Have done this in the US,and it is a total different ballgame to using a rifle..It is a totally different kill than with a bullet. The animal doesnt drop immediately as with a bullet. It dies of massive hemmorage,so it can run a good distance before it drops.Especially if you go charging over to collect the kill. You need to be an exellent tracker to find the animal, and how many people have that kind of skill here,[or a good dog as well?].

As for Hector..Can we leave him out in the woods in Canada??Like in the deep woods, prefably in bear country tied to a tree slatherd in honey or bacon fat??
