That the same idea as the FAA Knowledge Exam? Surprised it doesn't give instantaneous feedback.

    Hi Manic
IAA and CAA way of doing things is to do mutiple choice questions onto a peice of paper and then it is submitted to be corrected.
Long and painstaking wait for candidates to get results....

There is usually a great debate over which system is better. FAA questions are easier and from a known and published bank. The oral on the other hand is much much tougher.:p

I know that for the CAA ATPL exams at least, they don't even look at the answer sheets for at least one week before passing them through their marking machine. The results come out about two weeks after the week you sat the exams. I don't know if this is the only reason behind it but I believe it's to prevent people from applying to re-sit exams they failed the following month as by the time you get your results, the deadline for the next set of exams has already passed (they run the exams once a month). Why they don't just refuse applications for consecutive sittings instead, I don't know.

FAA is multiple choice as well, but it's done on a computer. As soon as you hit 'submit', it gives you your score. I don't see why a similar server-based system can't be used.

Oral was a bit of an eye-opener, all right. My favourite question was 'How long after SCUBA diving can you fly or carry a passenger?' My immediate thought was "I'm in Kentucky. How often can this come up?!" Of course, it's a valid question, and the certificate is valid nationwide, so I've no cause to complain. Closely followed by "How much fuel in the aircraft?" "43 gallons". "How much usable fuel?" "40 gallons". "Why are three gallons unusable?" "Ermm...."
