Hey, I think my Playstation is kaput but just want to make sure as I would be fairly certain its out of warranty. But just loaded it up but in the disc (Fifa 11 so fine condition) and it wouldn't recognize the disc, so changed it for PES 11 (Just bought today) and nothing, changed to another game and still nothing. This is what is happening

That is exactly what is happening mine. So I assume its gone and unfixable. I bought it about 3/4 years ago as well so doubt Sony will take it. But any ideas? Would it be possible to buy a cheap PS3 basically just the console no cables and no HDD.

Any help greatly appreciated, even a shoulder to cry on would do the job :D.

    Cheers.

You have more rights than the warranty, call up the shop you got it and tell them the problem and say you want a repair/refund/replacement speak to the manager if needed and state that you know your consumer rights politely and you'll find a lot of information on about dealing with this and your rights some other who had to deal with it in the small claims court PS3 thread read this and you'll know more about where you stand.

same thing happened to me, tried cleaning the lens, replacing the blu ray drive, replacing the cables inside and nothing worked. Ended up getting a new Ps3 as i was out of warranty.

Sony did offer a refurbished unit for 133 euro.

Not a bad idea but I don't think I have the receipt (Stupid I know)

Cheers Boom, guess I will have to go that route I reckon anyway.

FYI - if you do get a new one, put the old one on adverts for spare parts, i got rid of mine within a day and had some cash towards the new one.

Friend of mine the exact same thing happened last week. It was working as normal and they bought a new game. Put the new game in and it didn't recognize it. Other games also didn't load after that. They got a quote from someone in Dublin to fix it for e140. It may be better buying a new one.

Then a cousin got the blue screen of death? They took out the HDD, started the PS3 and reformatted the HDD which worked. I thought the XBOX was bad :D

Yeah but its rare for these to happen with the PS3. Happened someone I know as well and they got it fixed for 80 so thinking of getting it fixed.

when i rang sony, they also recommended this as the drivers are re-installed by a full format. It didnt work for me.

There is also another way of starting up the PS3 that gives another menu. Hold down the start button on the PS3, keep holding it until it boots up, then it will shuit down again. Release the button and then press again and keep holding. You will here a double beep and a new menu will open with different formatting options. Just make sure you take a backup before trying anything like this.
