Benefits of fasting?

Are there any real health benefits when you fast? I once fasted 72 hours and my blood pressure dropped quite a lot, before it was a bit to high. My blood glucose was the best I've ever seen. Would you recommend intermittent fasting for most people?

Intermittent fasting seems to have a lot of benefits, and so far, it looks a lot safer than some of the celery-and-water detoxes that are so popular.

72 hours is pushing it, but certainly fasts of one day seem to have benefits.

There was a piece in the Daily Mail recently about how people who ate 650 calories for two days a week, and normally for the other days, had the same health benefits as people who dieted on a Mediterranean diet. 650 cals a day is almost certainly IF.
