    Hi Guys

I'm looking to get a bike on the cycle to work scheme. I need the bike to commute to work and also to try and go cycling some evenings as need to get fit and lose some weight. I will be using the full €1000 on the bike and accessories.

I'm 6ft and 15-16 stone, not fit at all, I would love to maybe do a cycle challenge next year or join a cycling club but not at the moment due to fitness levels.

What bikes would you recommend from Halfords and also what accessories would I need. I did a search and to be honest I was getting confused with all the different types of bikes etc.

thanks for any tips or advice in advance.

Was thinking about this myself, if you've car insurance with AXA the Boardman bikes would be a steal.

I'm roughly the same height and weight and bought a Giant Defy 3 last year through BTW, Can't fault it very comfortable, though a novice on road bikes, takes a bashing on our roads with manhole covers and bad cycle lanes. I cycle 20 miles a day total to and from work city traffic and a park to go through. I've never had a puncture and the bike feels solid under you, brakes are good when needed and it can go some when you make it. just my twopence. you could get some gear with that too, jacket shorts lights etc and add the clip pedals shoes etc down the road a bit.... best of luck I know my head was melted, however very happy with my decision a year on

Does it have to be halfords?
If it does stay away from the applo's and carrera's. The boardman's are supposed to be good but I have never cycled one.

    Hi Guys

Thanks for the feedback. It doesn't have to be halford's but they are the only bike shop i know in Longford.

Same story with me 6 months ago - bit taller bit bigger bought this http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-GB/bikes/model/escape.4/7090/43393/ it has been absolutely great able for anything and comfortable, had done nothing for years and now go fo a regular 60 -70K spin. Am now contemplating commute of 55K! (or giving up work to cycle more!!). Would thoroughly recommend it and Altitude in Waterford for their recomendation

It could b worth taking a trip down to Dublin some day and visiting a few dedicated bike shops, nothing against Halfords but when I did the CTW a few months back I figured on going to a "proper" store. Ended up getting one in Penny Farthing I think they were called, great service.

Picked up a Dawes Discovery 501, very happy with it, handles well, light enough and good breaking. I'm 5'6 and 65 kg's so a lot smaller than you but I imagine getting a larger style will sort you out.
