Need to backup my hard drive

I have a Dell Studio and it won't turn on. There is a problem with the power button, the wire is broken. Now I have insurance cover and can send it away to get fixed. BUT I know that Dell will wipe all the info so I need to back it up.

I can take it out myself, but what do I need to create a clone. I have another laptop I can use and a 1tb external drive I can store it all on.

I reckon its doable, but how easy is it and what do I need to look out for. My question is how will i drive power to the hard drive I take out, will I need to open the other laptop up to use it to power the drive I have taken out?

    Thanks in advance!
