I'm 26 living with a room mate and paying €550 per month rent each. I was made Redundant end of May and went on dole straight away, i got a small redundancy package not much but nearly all gone as most has gone into paying my rent along with my weekly dole. I can't believe i never thought about Rent Allowance, completely forgot about it, i think i read somewhere here that you can get it back dated is this correct? I know my landlord has to agree which i think she will. Is this possible?

    Thanks

    Ian

Yes it is possible for you to get rent allowance as an assistance.I would go in bring all your details and a redunacy letter also. They will then give you your form to fill out and they will means test you by coming out to your place.
To back date i have no idea if they will i think only if you have applied and waiting for it even then not sure they do.
Good luck with everything hope you get another job soon :)

they only back date from when you apply. they would just argue that you had the means to pay your rent by yourself up untill now which would be true since your still living there

you should apply straight away beacuse there can be delays in getting the money. you also need to be paying rent within the max limit (€) for your area or you may not be granted any rent allowance at all. you'll find the max limits on www.welfare.ie or www.citizenadvice.ie . i had a quick look and for a single person in shared accomadation you cannot get €550 per month even if your living in dublin. could you move to a cheaper place?

    good luck
