should our politicians pensions be performance related.??
    eg.
if it turns out that particular ministers made bad or wrong decisions during their terms in office (e-voting machines, hse mess, our economy) should'nt they receive a lesser pension when they reach retirement age.

we dont seem to have any other sanctions on our politicians and regardless of how they perform they are still sitting pretty

Interesting idea but I wouldn't object to poor ideas in the sense that it may stifle many who have good ideas but aren't sure about trying them.
I would punish them for allowing gross negligence and wastefulness especially when plenty of advice (as was the case with evoting) as against them.

i agree, you dont want to stiffle people.
but there has been so many really bad decisions over the years. If there was some sort of possible penalty for such decisions maybe the proper groundwork and preparations would be taken. i dont think anybody minds when genuine mistakes are made but at the moment pure incompetence and greed are allowed with no possible penalty.

Historically the Athenian people had the voting power to exile mis-behaving politicians for 10yrs. The downside in Ireland's case would be no-other country would except our exiled politicians.

    hahahaha
i like that idea, and it could work.

we could always ship them off to rockall !!
and then we'd get a double bonus because then that would deter any interest from the uk in any ownership rights for the island

We have plenty uninhabited islands off the west coast. Drop them off there, and cut off all transport and communications.
Any of them man enough or woman enough to make it back to the mainland off their own batt, are probably worth rehabilitating back into society. The rest ............ let them eat fish;)

Re. Dont vote them in again

i know thats the way a democracy works but there are a few problems with that.

when they dont get re-elected they recieve 1 years salary (i think its a year) as a severance payment, unlike the statutory redundancy payments that us mere mortals recieve if we're lucky.

they have a very large state pension waiting for them, possibly straight away if they have been long time TDs. again we must wait at least till we are 65??

they most likely will be appointed to the senate by their party leader, without the need for any public approval.

im sure there are many more benifits for any poor politician who does'nt hold onto their seats.

Proper democracy would help too, not this watered-down stuff passed off as democracy in Ireland. We're essentially a one-party country. For reference I'd suggest looking at the Swiss method of governance.

    thats true Confab.

its not just some of the politicians we have to change in this country, its the whole system of democracy. we need a government that is truely in the service of its people.
