This evening while nearing the end of my journey my car seemed to loose its poke on the motorway. I had the accelerator pedal down full but she would'nt go above 120kmh , I would'nt say she was labouring just seemed to stick at that speed and not want to give me anymore. When i dropped gears off the motorway it felt different too. Had the battery replaced the previous day, this morning i noticed some oil on ground just behind front bumper! Dunno if thats relevant to anything...... So I have to be in a certain place at a certain time early tmrw very important, will it die on me over say 70km? Can anyone enlighten me as to what the problem is. The car is an 01 passat tdi. Thanks.

do you get any sort of a hissing noise? for all the world it sounds like there could be a leak in the turo charge pipe going to the inlet manifold. here's why i think that: with the oil leak-the charge pipes (routed down the front of the engine) do have a residue of oil going through them, that's why you never ever overfill a diesel. no power:if all the boost air cant get into the engine your not going to get all the power. no mention of a warning light:the leak is most likely AFTER the MAF sensor.got work done recently: not a 110% sure of the set up but i think one of the pipes need to be moved to remove the battery, i think.any VW techs on to confirm this?

could be as simple as a blocking fuel filter,

    yeh could be.
so does it just not go over 120km or is it lacking power through the range, because you say when you drop a cog it doesnt sound the same,so does it actually sound different or does it perform different, like does it sound throaty. i still think it could be an intake problem.

I did'nt notice the sound changing just the performance. When i went up through the gears it took a lot longer to reach desired speed. Will i be able to use the car tomorrow do you think? What if i disconnected the maf sensor and run the car round the block would that tell me anything?

disconnecting the MAF should make it worse not better. if its fuel related i wouldnt take the chance.if its air related (which i think it is) it wont make a difference.but you should really get it checked as soon as you can. i hope this helps.

As above it sounds to me like the fuel filter is blocked, one of the obvious side effects is
lots of huff and little puff which will get worse until the engine hardly starts, the more dangerous side effect is stalling when you take your foot off the gas.

UPDATE I chanced the journey today and she started fine but once on the motorway after about 15 miles she started to struggle again...I had the pedal down and was getting nothing, I found that when i eased off on the accelerator she started to pick up speed again. Anyway i pulled in and knocked the car off and on again, this seemed to sort it and i was on my way again. I reached my destination and also the return journey had no problems 130 miles round trip. Does this help identify problem or rule out anything else?

Could be crap in the fuel tank.

Could be overboosting and going into safe mode. Very hard to diagnose over the net.

There's a thread here of people in various areas with diagnostic equipment. Have a look for someone in your area with VAGCOM, they should be able to see is there any faults stored in the car.

gona do a u turn here, sounds more like a fuel delivery problem, most likely the filter. i would definitly get this replaced as soon as possible this will sort it out because if it was a managment problem you will get a warning light on. the fact that when you released the throttle and when reapplied the power partially came back says to me that the delivery of the filter is partially blocking and unblocking itself. let me know how you get on
