I plan to take pictures again this year at DM and am just wondering if anyone can suggest good locations.
I was at donore harriers club house last year but runners were all still very bunched together so it didn't really work.

I was at the start, mile 11 and the finish last year. They were still coming through in pretty big numbers at 11'ish when I left to head back to the finish, and it probably wasn't the most picturesque background to the shots either.

What makes for a good location? What are you looking for?

Preferably a bit of green, maybe a nice building or other feature in the background, smaller groups of runners, no tall buildings or other things that may cast shadows.

Orwell Park (17) and Fosters Avenue (22) are good places to get shots... runners generally spread out, but may lack some spectators.

The run in on Pearse Street would also be good as long as you're not expecting too many smiles!

That was the problem at the finish line last year, so maybe a location before they hit the wall and are still on a runners high and thinking this marathon stuff is easy :D

Having the sun behind you and towards the runners so they are not in shadow.

Good one Robinph, doesn't always work out that way though.

How about the bridge across the Dodder coming in to Clonskeagh? Corner of Clonskeagh road and Beech Hill road.
Facing west there's a park (and a pub, facing east there's a small office), because it's a bridge there are no tall buildings, it's about 18/19 miles in so people will be reasonably spread out, and its the low point before the road starts rising into Clonskeagh so people should still be feeling happy.

Nice idea to use the new street view and not a bad location either and not too far a cycle for me.

What about at Walkinstown roundabout just after mile 13? I'm going to try hit up mile 9 and the roundabout...

I'd agree with Orwell, some nice leafy roads around there which will have some great autumn colours and the runners are normally well spread out by there

You'll get a great shot on Fosters Avenue if you've got a good zoom lens, especially looking westwards as the runners come down the hill.

How about pics of runners coming under the Luas Bridge/Via duct on Milltown Road.

For the past few years I've been taking photos at the DCM - not this year - too busy (trying to run!)

    My spots were:
    Close to the start
    College Green
Phoenix Park - close to Garda HQ
Kilmainham - before the turn, coming from Inchicore direction
    Beggar's Bush

For the last two spots watch the sun (hopefully we'll have a little) as it fouled up some of my shots on a few occasions.

btw - before anyone 'collars me' about cycling around the course - I always run (taking the shortest off-course route) between points.

Turns are often good spots, particularly if you're on the outside of the turn, rather than the inside - also gives anyone you know an opportunity to see you - works both ways!

I would tend to pick a turn as well, a lot of people head to the inside of the turn , but those on the outside are easier to pick out.

As far as running round turns I'd tend to take the longest route myself if there is a bunch of people as otherwise you get your stride messed up by people cutting across you at the last moment so find it easier to keep pace taking a less tight route and will actually pass people on the outside.

I got a good few snaps here last year, gets crowded though and only I had my daugther with me the ideal spot would probably be on the central reservation on the N11 or bring a step ladder :p.
