    Depends on a few things
    - did it overheat
    - does it need skimming
    - is the head cracked
    - what caused the HG to go, ie anything else needed, water pump, rad etc

well i just found out today that i need to replace mine (06 318i) amongt other things..

    Fan Belt 25
    Tensioner 94
    Cover Gasket 59
and 3 hours labour @ 60 euro an hour.

so im guessing roughly 120 in total for the cover gasket?

Tiesto, I think you'r confusing engine cover gasket with head gasket, if not you'r getting a great deal.

Cheers for your replys. I think the rad was done on it and that may have something to do with it.I was told it had been overheating on long trips "occasionally"!I took it for a short test drive and it runs fine but then again it was no more than a 2 mile run at no more than 85kmph. Would ye have a ball park figure for a head gasket replacement only? Cheers

I would look for other reasons before assuming HG. Some times people are too quick to whip the head off a car. Is it holding coolant? Was the expansion tank done when then done the rad?

I'm not overly familiar with the E46 320D, but on the rest of the E46's the o'rings in the cooling system tend to go hard/brittle over time and can cause problems, especially if disturbed when fitting the new rad. If you can narrow down the leak to any of the joints you can buy the o-rings for cents in the likes of abbey seals. BMW will want to sell you the entire pipe with o-rings for €40 or so.

If all comes to all and the head has to be done you'd be looking at in the region of €700 -> €900 at an indy.

Hi thanks for your reply. No its not holding coolent. It seems to be bleeding out of an overflow of some sort up near the coolent filler intake. the rad can be heard bubbling away. That was after about a half an hour of it ticking over nicely in neutral and then reved up to 3000 rpm and held for about a minute. theres no signs of any other irratic behaviour. and i made a mistake. i was informed that the fan belt had been changed, not the rad as i was first told. Cheers

If the cooling system isn't presurising the coolant will boil off. Is the internal heater working correctly? I'm not sure if these were fitted with a waterpump with a plastic impeller...

Can you post a pic of where the coolant is coming out?

The heater isnt great..... I had it on at 32 degrees and it was chilly enough. See the image below thats attached where it is leaking from the little pipe at the at the coolant intake. Its like a over flow pipe. Thanks again. Your advice is very much appreciated

Never worked on that engine myself, but Autodata shows 7.25hours to replace the Cyliner head gasket. There must be a right pile of dismantling involved. If this is right, then on labour alone I reckon you are gonna be looking at around €400 and then put parts on top of that.
