    Hi everyone!

So I saw a topic someone started for Ben Dunnes gym opening on the 20th Oct for €190 per year on Jervis st.
I'm 29 and I gave up smoking a few weeks ago and i'm not in the best of shape but want to get strong and healty, I'm not over weight but have a small belly happening which I'm not to happy about over the past year or so :-(

What i want to ask is, should i join one of his gyms? I live in Eastwall and would like somewhere close to me so I will go and not just do it for a few weeks and stop going casue its far away. I dont have a car so walking would be great for me.

I'm pretty broke too (aren't we all ) so his gyms seem like a good start for me. Do you think his gyms would have a standing order thing set up for a monthly payment instead of paying in one lump sum?

Can you guys recommend to me what sort of clothing gear i should buy? like runners tracky bottoms etc? I'm guessing i should go at least 3 times a week too.

lol i am a bit of a paranoid too so I will be very nervous going for the first while too.

Thanks for all your help guys and sorry for all the silly questions!

I know when i first joined a gym i went round blagging passes for trials etc just to see if i'd like it, i knew if i bought stuff for at home i simply wouldnt do it, if you had the motivation a few kettles might start ya off?

Pay as you go gyms do a lunch time special sometimes. If you haven't been to a gym before I'd giving gyming a go before you buy a years membership. Most good gyms do a free trial pass (with a small tour and sales pitch). Call into the one nearest you and ask for a pass.

I joined bd Fitness out in lucan about a yr ago and they do
a direct debit of €18 a month think thiers a reg fee with that,
and they give free trials all the time so id say jervis is the same

And if you do end up joining tell the trainners what your goals
are and they will do you up a program... But diet is half the battle
    for weight loss

Everyone has to start some where so dont be paro

    sorry bout that...kettle bells

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kettlebell

When i started i thought these to be the greatest this ever..and still do, all sorts of stuff you can do with them at home or in the gym. I found them really good for beginner squats as well, nothing like momentum to get those heels to the floor:D

Squod: Thanks, i have a look at the DCC gym Behind the Tara st train station a few times, always seems to be mad busy but it does look great!

Dotty145: thanks for that, i guess everyone is a little paro before they start things like this as its a little foreign to them lol, I think i will give them a call about the Jervis st BD gym, go up and have a look around, see how i feel about the place. Thanks

Xgtdec: Thanks for the link! Thinking it might be a good idea to start off at home first with a few exercise to get my core strong as i have seen a few people say on here before I go full into it.

So Inever got around to joining a gym yet but think I will invest in some kettles as xgtdec had said to start off with at home and use some guides on the internet with youtube etc to gain a sort of stronge core.

I had a quick look on argos and this is what came up for Kettles. Any of you guys recommend any of these or should I go somewhere else to get my kettles?

    Ta guys!

The kettlebells you've linked to on Argos are from 5 lb (2.3 kg) @ €12.99 to 30lb (13.6 kg) @ €65.49. That makes them dearer than other sources.

I'm no expert, but from what I've picked up around here, 2.3 kg is way too light to do much good. It seems generally recommended that girls typically start at 8 kg.

www.buykettlebelldublin.com seems to have a good reputation (I bought one there myself after reading positive feedback on boards) and sells two types: regular cast iron kettlebells and competition kettlebells. The 8 kg ordinary one is €20 and the competition one is €29.99.

As I understand it, the advantage of the competition one is that all the weights are the same size and shape, so it's easy to progress from one to the other as you get stronger.

Whatever KB you buy, another thing to watch out for is that the handle is smooth. Apparently some kettlebells are moulded in bits and then welded together in such a way that there can be a seam along the handle, which is uncomfortable in use. I don't know about the ordinary KBs from buykettlebelldublin.com, but the competition ones are definitely smooth.

There are some great online resources for learning KBs. The one I like best is www.myomytv.com, because it has tutorials that combine youtube videos with detailed written instructions, and there's also a discussion board.

However, before you even buy a kettlebell, what about trying one of the pay-as-you-go KB classes, where a KB is provided and you can see how you like it? There seem to be several around Dublin and I'm sure elsewhere too.

You could save loads on gym membership by getting a KB, a few classes and working out at home - but obviously only if you like it! (Personally, I'm hooked, though I haven't done it for long!)
