Were going to pick about 5 people to debate with and conduit questions to Mr Gogarty on a number of topics.

If you would like to be considered then post here saying so.

You need to be able to spend a good deal of time online on Wednesday.

I expect full disclosure of anything pertinent like membership of a political party or job as a journalist etc. These won't affect your chances of being selected, it's just the proper way to do things.

Selection will be made on Posting history, ability to debate, analytic ability and civility.

    DeV.

    What time on Wednesday?

I'd be up for it. No politicial memberships or otherwise, work as a company MD.

Depending what time on Wednesday. If it's early evening then yes, if it's normal hours then probably not.

In my past I was a member of the Labour party but tend to have migrated towards a more liberal political outlook as I have gotten older. Also a former politics mod and Soc Cat mod.

I would also hope that consultation from the politics regulars be taken into account before the "chosen" few are decided upon.

Hopefully all day wednesday but we can rotate people in and out if they cant make all day.

This thread is not for questions, its for putting your name in the hat, DrumSteve, i'll move your post to the questions thread shortly.

    No worries. Thanks Dev.

Would have considered it but if he's already claimed that backing up FF is "patriotic" I don't see the point in discussing anything with him.

    No party allegiences.

No longer a member of the Green Party, I was thrown out before I could raise issues at local level, but I am currently, along with others trying to get the Greens to address issues surrounding the CER and the conflict between Minister Ryans actions and Green Policy.

I am also currently petitioning the Dail Committee for ERA for action on this area.

I can make myself available if selected.

As a new member to boards.ie I am prepared to submit my questions for moderation beforehand.

I fear I will not be acceptable to Mr Gogarty, as anytime I or my friends have raised these issues with a member of the GPP they just refuse to speak.....saying this is a matter for the Minister ......who just says ....the case is closed

    Thanks

Mr Gogarty wont have any say in who gets picked. No way. He hasn't asked and I wont be offering. :)

If you want to submit a question then heres the thread for you!

There wont be any "prevetting" of questions either, that drives me bonkers when politicians put things "off the table". Happens in RTE all the time. Bertie wouldnt appear on programs that didnt agree to avoid certain topics etc. Wont be happening here.

Again, to be fair, neither Mr Gogarty nor the Green Party have even suggested that to me or anyone else. It would be politely refused.

Has to be said, +1 to him for coming out to have this debate.

Then again, like office holders in term limited positions I suppose he has little to lose (and maybe much to gain) at the next election.

Would you not want him to explain that remark, and no doubt one he will be asked.

I have no party allegiances or anything else to declare so would be up for some discussion with Mr Gogarty.

I'd like a chance to talk to him.
More in the super secret mod forum.

It will be well thought out.

Not sure if I'm suited. I've met Gogarty a couple of times on an issue affecting South Dublin Co Co as part of a wider issue related to Dun Laoghaire and Dublin City Councils. I also know friends of his from secondary school and university and might be seen to be biased in that way. Voted Green the past couple of elections but am not a rock steady Green voter.

I'd like to put myself forward for the following reasons:

I have no interest in any political party - my view is they're all as bad as each other.

I don't know who Gogarty is (except he swore in the Dail which was great entertainment)

I'm the regular Joe Soaps other half - who has to manage the household budget and make cuts regularly - so yes I feel I could go into the Dail and make general basic cuts.

Hopefully I'll be able to ask questions in "lay persons terms" - and hopefully receive answers in the same way...without me needing to consult a dictionary...

There are bound to be a lot of people with an agenda in this debate, so I don't expect to persuade too many people and expect a lot of slagging in the sideline comments. But I was asked and agreed to come forward. If DeVore, who has an open mind, accepts my bone fides and some of the arguments put forward, that will be good enough for me.

There are a few regulars from the politics/irish economy forum who would be quite good. Not my place to name anyone but they know who they are and generally have plenty to say on the direction this country is/isn't heading.

I would be up for this.

    Pick me,

    Labour party supporter,

    1. How can the Greens support the bank bail out? Propping up property developers who should be declared bankrupt. Let them go to the wall and let property prices drop the market will only start moving again. Nationalise BOI if neccessary.
    2. When is the ESB going to be held to account for destorying the drinking water in Cork last year? There is still a smell of chlros from my tap water ever since this hapened. Gromley is protecting the ESB and preventing the report on what happened that night being released.
    3. Landfills or incineration which is it? recycling will only take care of some of the waste, we need a decision.

If it's not too late, I would like to participate. I don't have any affiliation with Irish political parties, but I research European political institutions, and so occasionally write about Irish politics (mainly for an academic audience). I'm also - eek! - a Yank, but don't hold it against me! And in the interest of full disclosure, in a past life I worked on/with campaigns for the Democratic party and affiliated civic groups in the US.

All the more reason why Liam Byrne should be one of the ones to ask him questions - having leadership thrust upon you and all that.

Cheers for the vote, johnny, but I'd be slow to; Gogarty has already been posting on boards complaining about "hyperbole and BS", and that's ALREADY a little too inconsistent and two-faced for my liking considering his claims about "patriotism".

I've no problem discussing/debating something in a reasonable manner with someone who doesn't have an agenda and double-standards, but I would be afraid that a well-coached political opponent would cause me to lose it with frustration and inconsistency and that any good that might possibly come out of this, after DeVore's initiative I wouldn't want to accidentally undermine the event by losing my cool.

I doubt any will, having read Gogarty's comments toward other posters, but I don't want to be the one to throw the laptop on the floor in disgust at "playing politics" instead of being straight and honest.

I can't understand why boards has become a conduit for Paul Gogarty.

If he is not busy effin and blindin in the Dail he is on twitter trying to raise publicity for his inane and intendedly controversial comments.

Gogarty has a proven track record in courting publicity and who is to say that he is not now trying to use boards and it's members to do the same.

Don't worry, boards.ie has a cussword filter. **** you Liam Byrne is not an option.

DeV, hope you don't mind, but I've posted in TPP to see if any pinsters want to come and post/hijack the thread. The likes of blindjustice, yoganmahew and namawinelake should have all the info at their fingertips to challenge any asserts by Gogarty that are not backed up.

Wow... and they accuse US of being childish?! heheh...

I didnt ask for apolitical people, I asked for "full disclosure of political party memberships".

But ya know, never let the truth get in the way of a good hatin' :)

Johnny, for your sins you can conduit any questions they have :p
