02 Primera - intermittant engine warning light

    Folks,
Hoping someone might have a suggestion...

My GFs 1.6 Petrol 02 Nissan Primera, 95k miles..recently the engine warning light has started coming on...and then going off again. It might be on for a couple of days, and off for a couple of days. As soon as the light comes on, the fuel economy goes through the floor, only around 25mpg. When the light is off, fuel economy is normal again (36mpg-ish). Car drives fine always, except when the light is on, there's a very faint 'chugging', when off the throttle, but its barely noticeable.

We took the car to the local garage, who changed the oxygen sensor, but the intermittant problem persists.

Any ideas what it might be? The only thing I could think of that could cause such a drop in fuel economy would be the cat, but that wouldn't be an intermittant problem?

    Thanks in advance.
    FP

The fist place I would look would be the engine management system...When you next have the red light get it put on a diag. machine pronto!

I guess MAF(Mass air flow) sensor is dirty or broken. If diagnosis points that, try to clean it with contact cleaner. If it doesn't help, time to change

    Hi,

If it is the P12 model, it could be a stretched timing chain. Engine will sound rough at idling. Will throw up errors relating to camshaft / crankshaft sensors.
