okay so in my school detention goes on every lunchtime and lasts 30 minutes and you go in there fro minor things no homework misbehaving that sort of thing.

and theres this rule this year if you get 5 detentions, on friday you have after school detention i was wondering are they allowed to keep you back after school say if there was a bus meant to collect you and bring you home fro 300 euro a term are they allowed to make you miss that because of detention

    Try not getting in trouble.
They can do whatever they want, its their school, their rules.

Yes. When you joined the school you and your parents signed a contract to join the school and to abide by their rules.

I'd be fairly sure they would have had a catch all 'I agree to abide by the rules of this school' phrase - they all do.

Start spending more time staying out of trouble and being places on time than plotting how to get out of detention.

You have it easy. In our place, if they're late at all, even a minute, they stay in an hour after school.

All schools generally require you to sign a Contract abiding to abide by the rules and face disciplinary procedures should you fail to do so.

Like any other premises or institution, schools are free to develop their own policies in accordance with the law, and these are generally checked by a Solicitor, at least in my old school it was. If you don't abide by these policies then you can be refused entry or removed for transgressing them continually, in accordance with Department of Education and Skills procedures.

They can do it if they want to and, to be honest, if you get detention five times, you deserve it.

Seems pretty reasonable to me. You can have after school detention in my school without any warnings although you are told of this usually a week in advance.

Not really. You can have a laugh without ending up in detention. I know how far you can go with all my teachers, you should too. I have a laugh, but without pushing it.

*sigh*... so many of you are wrong.

Yes they can do it (they can dole out any punishment they see as "fit".

BUT things like keeping you back, no; they need permission from your parents.

By the "contract" (writen or orally) you're told "your child is to be here at X time to Y time". Say 9 - 3, if you aren't allowed to leave after 3 without the parents knowing then yes, it's against what they agreed and are (to an extent) keeping you against your will.

But OP, just make sure your guardian(s) knows about it; even if it's a letter they have to sign that you're given, it's up to you to make sure they sign it. So no thinking of "well if I claim they didn't give it, then it's illegal", it doesn't work that way. You;d just be in more trouble.

Most times your parents just explain the situation and it's sorted out some other way.

HOWEVER :D If it's in the rules that they can keep you back, yeah then you can't do anything (beyond your parents explaining why they shouldn't keep you back).
Just don't be a little bollocks and cause trouble; if they get you in late for one day, ask to speak to your parents (or phone them yourself on a phone... without people fidning out unless you have permission, though I really don't think it's a good idea to break more rules but sometimes you have to.

As for that... yeah, "having a laugh" is one thing. Being a disruption is another (lots of people never can tell the difference). As for your homework; it's your fault.
You don't understand it; tell your teacher. They refuse to help you; tell your parents.

As long as the parents are told. If you are in *BIG* trouble in my school Saturday Detention. They do study for J.C and L.C on that day
