You need to fill out a form to say he was driving and get him to sign it. Worse case scenario is he'll have to pay a fine. No points on his license or yours.

thanks....so thats cross border points system isnt in yet then

no way of getting out of fine then as cant see him forking out the money as lost his job last week so il end up forking it out

Surely it'd be cheaper for you (Insurance/Risk wise I mean) to sponsor him the money for the fine than taking the points on your own licence?

He doesn't have to sign it, the registered owner has to sign it.

Fill in the drivers details, name and address and post it back to the Gardai.

If he's from Belfast, he might never hear anything of it, or he might receive a Garda fine. Whatever pans out, it's out of the registered owners hands and those of the demon speeder.

oh he doesnt need to sign anything then, he's from Tyrone(so may hear about it) i was not with him in the car..

i just fill out the form with his details and send it off i presume registered post in this case and He/I may get off without paying fine

When you name him, you may get an enquiry to check if he was insured to drive the car.

On the back of the speeding notification is the part to fill in, nominating who was driving at the time of the offence.

ok thanks not sure how long this usually takes but my friend will probably be contacted by guards by post to verify if he was really driving the car and then get a fine by post (maybe might not fine him at all since he lives up north) -is that the usual procedure?

    happened me before.

i was driving someone elses car and it went like this:
    - i got flashed. i said bollocks!
    - letter came in the post about 3 weeks later alleging the reg owner was speeding
    - reg owner put in my details, said i was driving and posted it back
    - i got a letter out about 3 weeks later alleging i committed the offence
    - i filled out the form, paid the fine, got the points

nobody asked if anyone was insured to do anything etc etc but that doesn't rule out them asking i guess.

How is this not open to abuse? For example, my brother, who lives in South Africa, comes over for holidays every so often, and drives my car. If I pointed the finger at him (rightly or wrongly) there's nothing they can do? I'd imagine after pulling that a few times they'd just whack me with the fine?
