hi everyone dont know if this is allowed but i have my .17hmr rifle for 18 months now and i only ever went for rabbits but i got my very first charlie last night and took him down at 110 yards away i heard a load of lads saying that a .17hmr would not be strong enough for charlie but i dont think so as it only took one head shot with hornady 17grain v-max and job done

why do lads think the .17hmr is not strong enough for charlie

With a well placed shot of course it will drop a fox...
A centerfire is much more forgiving though...

Congrats on your first fox !!!

The .17 on ranges over 100 meters with a body shot may lack penetration to hit vital organs.

    Well done!

I'll never forget the first fox I shot :)
The first I shot was with a .22lr:eek:

However, as others have stated the centrefire is more forgiving if you are a shade off.
Once I went centrefire I never considered a rimfire for anything other than a small bit of shooting I have in small fields <1 acrea where the round is best suited

    Congratulations.

FS has it. HMR gives you less room for error with a fox sized animal. He is more likely to go much farther and take longer to die (possibly from infection) with a HMR wounding than from a centrefire wounding.

I was reading an interesting article on the .17hmr in the sporting shooter magazine.
in it the guy kinda put it well on the suitability of a .17hmr for fox's he said "provided the range is within the capability of the shooter, the bullets inherent accuracy will do the job, since a fox with a hole in the head-of whatever diameter-tends to have a drastically limited life expectancy". made me chuckle.

Well done on the fox lad.

Had a look on their site couldnt find the artcle online. It was a small article on the Savage Arms 93R17 BTVS.
here I scanned it. Easier than trawling through thier site.

I was out with a friend about a week ago, he asked me to come along foxing and he had one of these rifles. He shot 2 foxes in the front of the chest and they both went down without a twitch.
The ranges were about 80 to a 120 odd yds, i thought it killed them humanely enough me self.
He took the shots standing as well, his known as a good shot round here.

I've shot more foxes than I care to count with my Savage Arms .17 HMR and regularly drop them out to 150yds, shot one a friend of mine had wounded which ran on to just over 220, held crosshairs on his back and drilled him straight through the chest, took one step and rolled over !! I have a .223 but to be honest dont use it much, .17 is lighter, cheaper to feed, prefer to call them in than take long range shots. Just my humble opinion.

Fair play to you, I know that when I got my first (and only fox to date) I put up a pic and received plenty of positive comments from the lads on here. So well done to you :D
