Is there a minimum caliber or licence for shooting goats in Ireland or are they counted as vermin??

No Min, but I would not use anything smaller than .223 myself.
"feral goats, as an alien species have no protection under the wildlife act.

A lad that used to post on here shot a fair number of goats with his .223. They didn't seem to complain.

2 sika prickets yesterday. I was actually doing a farmer I know a favour just over the border in Kildare - he had had enough of fattening a growing herd of wild sitka on his barley. I'm keeping these ones for Christmas and the new year since they should be extra tasty:D

Just add Hopps and a small bit of yeast and you will have venison beer...

    It's called Buck fever.
The best cure for it is to not take a shot until your breaths are calm.
You could have missed by feet if you were shaking like a leaf.

You have to put teh fact he is a deer out of your mind.

    it's only another bunny rabbit.
Thats why I advocate shooting bunnies as you get used to shooting with out being seen.

Key is to relax, "it can be hard if you are out of breath" take deep breaths and relax.
If you don't think you have a good position, move into a good position.
Key is to be relaxed and everything else will follow

    Thx for the tips Tack.
I was in a very good position and the stag was sideway. He knew i was close by, he turned arround and was looking for me . I think i was shaklng but the excitement took over and forgot to calm down and breath ! There were 4 stags arround roaring , the sun was out , no wind or rain , man that was a nice morning to be out. Can't wait to go again. Might have a sip or 2 of strong beverage to steady the hand a bit next time :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

Nothing so far, only seen sign on the ground, no animals yet visible. Saw one stag in a ride on the adjacent wood one morning, but he spotted me at the same time. Haven't been up in a couple of weeks though. Now it's colder, they might be more visible. Might get out this weekend with any luck.

    ...........it's only another bunny rabbit.....

"only" ................... The humble bunny to me is a worthy quarry who I respect and appreciate being able to hunt and to eat when he/she has been killed. I give everything I hunt the same respect. I think elitism towards one quarry over another detracts from us as hunters. I see myself as a hunter not a shooter when I am hunting.

Apparently Red Stags from the Carpathian Mtns in Eastern Europe(which are covered in rich primevial woodland) are up to three times heavier on averge then Reds from the denuded Moorlands of Scotland:confused:

Bunny, if you miss the point of aim on a bunny with a centrefire he hops off (ie head)
However if you miss the pint of aim on a deer you could wound him.
That was the honest reason I gave to a fella who was looking for some advice.(treat the deer like a bunny, aim to hit first time every time)

You seem to have missed my point, i treat all game the same, I don't miss wound bunnies, nor do I wound deer, if I can't get a clean shot I just don't take it.
Self control has to be applied when hunting.

 I'm assuming your working on the principle that if it hits the bunny anywhere on the head it will produce an instant kill which is a fair assumption but not guaranteed

    Never :eek::p
That was the honest reason I gave to a fella who was looking for some advice.(treat the deer like a bunny, aim to hit first time every time)

All hunters should endeavour to ensure an instant kill with the first shot regardless of quarry is my point, which i think you have missed

Should that be trigger instead of self :D

    Bunny.
I try and tailor my answer to the question.
A guy had buck fever, I tried to advise him on tricks to stop it.

And I have never seen a rabbit get up from a centrefire round to the head. 600 or so rabbits later.

It is my philosophy to use rabbits to practice on, It's not mentioned in the HCAP so it's not a rule, I personally believe it helps a lot though

    Bunny.

    Yes, Tac :(
I try and tailor my answer to the question.

    If you say so :(
A guy had buck fever, I tried to advise him on tricks to stop it.

I get "buck" fever but I find the only thing to do is for me to control it, not let it control me ;) I reckon lining a buck up in my scope and thinking it's a bunny might not be a good idea, just too damn freaky, next I might convince myself it's a pink fluffy elephant :P
And I have never seen a rabbit get up from a centrefire round to the head. 600 or so rabbits later.

You fire the "round"? when I do it it's the bullet that hits 'em :P
It is my philosophy to use rabbits to practice on

Ya, shows a lot of respect does that.
It's not mentioned in the HCAP

Probably because that's about shooting deer :)
so it's not a rule, I personally believe it helps a lot though

That's it, I'm convinced ! Back on thread so ;)

One deer this season, however i could have shot more.
Wallysworld asked me to shoot another as the herd stayed around for ~ 5 mins after I dropped the pricket.

    i said "wallysworld"
never be greedy, we have meat enough for today and tomorrow ;)

I don't get buck fever anymore, although for the first 3 or 4 years I have to say I had buck fever.

it took shooting a lot of bunnies to make shooting deer routine

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,096 ✭✭✭bunny shooter

When I'm hunting it is never routine. Every shot is different and requires full concentration.

You don't hunt often enough then , the situation may differ, the rules stay the same.

Would have to agree with you here,I have not done any wabbit hunting in well over six months and went out last week for some and boy was my stalking technique well rusty! This years wrabbits who have not been shot yet were seeing me first and running away!
Anyway on the second week of the open season I had the 'buckfever' my heart was racing with a nice fallow buck in my sights, tried to move to get a better shot (made more noise than two skeleton's humping on a tin roof!) he noticed and quickly headed into deep cover. Quarry size has never bothered me before but having a break has made me feel like a newbe again.
Have had a few trips out for rabbits now and my game is back,so will be out this weekend for the old buck!

Hunting is only one use of a firearm. There is target shooting too :P I never disputed the rules stay the same. But the situations in the field are never going to remain constant enough that you can become complacent about your shooting. Big difference shooting on the range to shooting in the field. When you get complacent with firearms that's when you'll make a mistake from my experience. A lot of the near misses and dangerous situations I have seen were lads that were very familar with firearms is my point.

That is why I am at home in the field and like a newbie on a range.
    I don't go often enough
I feel more comfortable in the field.

Although I love a range to go to when seeking advice or testing my 200 and 300 yard zero's.
