What to do with a brill little car with a possible dangerous steering problem?

    Hi all,

Just want a few points of view on my car situation from people who know cars/know the market these days!

My little 98 Corsa failed her NCT on a few things incluidn Emissions and the steering. I knew it was steering to one side but the NCT man seemed to think it was a danger to me. Then I brought it to the garage and he said it could just be the tracking.

The thing is I am not out of the country for 2 years with a job and its abandoned and I dont know what to do with her.

I dont want to spend E500 to fix the steering for the sake of driving it twice a year when i come home. yet I think its 'too good' to be scrapped. I need a dose of reality here: is a 98 car with a possible dangerous steering probelm that might be expensive a prime candidate for scrapping? I wouldnt be talking government scrappage deal as I myself wont be buying a car but just sent to a dump/car graveyard?

Can you sell an old car to someone who may need a banger for the government scrappage deal?

I would sell her for E100 if I thought something good would come of it and that she would be off my hands! But to even check out if it is indeed a 'terminal' steering problem will cost me in labour.

    Any ideas/imputs?

That story would bring a tear to your eye...

You could post a slightly sobby story on boards and hope that someone comes along and offers you the 100 to take it off your hands, there should be plenty of takers..and whats that?? Hark, I hear the sound of hooves...:D

Sell it for parts, that way you make a decent enough bit of money and you know that your lovely little car hasn't gone to waste!

How confident was the guy in the garage that it was only the tracking? Because thats not expensive to get fixed.

If it were me I think Id get it checked out properly first to see how much it will cost to get right. If you only need a car for occasional use and you like this one as much as you clearly do then even if it costs a few hundred quid to get fixed then it might be worth it.

Ok. Just wanted to find out is E100 for a car so old and with a possible problem even feasible these days.

Thats what I was thinking but do you mean advertise it for parts and let people come along and buy any bits they want. or actually sell the whole thing as it is to someone who would then sell it for parts? Because I am in another country now so I cant do the first! I think that sounds good though.

He wasnt that confident about it just being the tracking...he was just sugesting it might be. I know its the NCT's job to let you know the problems but he seemed genuinely worried for my safety, so i think it could be a lot more serious.

Where abouts are u located? I would take the car off your hands for €100 tomorrow. My friend who is out of work and wishes to become an apprentice mechanic has been looking for a car in need of repair to work on throughout the winter.

The car is in Limerick but there would be a possibility that it could get to Cork. But I wouldnt be happy about someone I know driving it that distance just in case.

You don't know Saxo from adam, so it should be fine:D Not being ar5y, I'd be the first to offer you the 100 and take a punt on it, just too many cars in the yard at the mo - should be an easy enough sale anyway.

I wasnt suggesting that. If I had a friend or family member drive it to where the buyer was I wouldnt be happy with that. I wouldnt care what happened once it was bought off me!

Well look already some of my queries have been answered here. That it can feasibly be sold for a few measly hundred for someone to work onr/parts etc.

    Already I am enlightened.

    thats your job id say.
i only got my car tracked today, it cost less than 50euro, and my tracking was so bad if i let go off the steering wheel, the car would nearly go in over the ditch!! since i got it done its like driving a new car, i really suggest getting this done.

Thats exactly the way with it alright, like my arms were tired and tense from holding the car on the road. Thanks for that!

This could be a case of "the sum of the parts is greater than the whole"! We all become emotionally/irrationally attached to our cars but it's only a tin box on wheels after all. Bring it to one of the many car breakers yards and they may take it off your hands for a better price than you would get selling it some poor sod who might have to hand over €500 to make it safe to drive. I can't remember the companys name but there is a good breakers yard operating on the old swords road near Santry - I dealt with them and they were pretty good

If you go for this Dottie, I will bring it there from Limerick for €50 transport fee, honest.

If you are genuinely interested in selling it for €100 PM me. I have another corsa that needs bit of TLC so I could possibly make one good one out of two.

I am also in Limerick and can collect ASAP

The car is not 'too good' to be scrapped. It's a heap of a car, and it deserves to be killed. Sell it, get as much as you can for it, and forget about it.

Now, how to forget I ever saw a 98 Corsa referred to as 'brill'?

It could be the tracking so. It could be so bad its dangerous but its fixable.
