I'm thinking of buying one, its a 2.0 swb. I test drove in on a bad road but now i'm worried if it will seem very under-powered when i'm on main roads. Does anyone here have one and how do you find it?

unless you buy a 2.4 one it'll always feel slow and sluggish

i have a 05 swb and i think its very nippy. very good on motorways and also on back roads. i've towed cars on trailers a couple of times and it certainly didn't lack power. its a 2 liter by the way

there is alot of different models in Transits if it felt very slow could just be the bog standard model think they only had 90bhp? Unless it had a hard life just worn out but they are usually fairly good to take abuse, just watch for flywheels and injector pumps

mine is the bog standard and for the use i have its plenty. i average about 32 mpg which i don't think is bad at all. and the top speed shall we say is impressive.

    Be careful

Driving an empty van may be fine. But throw a bit of gear in the back and different story.

What are you planning to use it for any wait or towing and the 2.0 will struggle at every incline you hit.

I have a 07 connect 1.8 with too much in the back always and it is shocking will get to 120kph but finds hills no other car would notice.

I won't normally have heavy loads. Maybe a few plasterboards slabs but usually just tools and 6ft steps(that don't fit easily in small vans). Thanks for all the replies:D

personally haven't noticed a lack on power when coming to hills etc when fully loaded. i have had up to 30 plaster slabs in it and although power was down it wasn't at a snails pace. (although i'd be taking it fairly handy any way). the only time i did find it struggle a little was when i had a jag on a trailer and brought it to dublin but the weight of that car it was understandable.

I had a 01 FWD 2.4 model for almost four years. the 2L version wouldn't pull itself out of a wet paper bag. FWD can be much more costly to have service work done such as brakes, ball joints etc than RWD. Also the dual mass flywheel in these vans give serious trouble when starting motor teeth brake up. I was quoted e1500 for the job, one of the reason why I shifted it for parts and bought a smiley.

Don't do it. Just walk away. Honestly, just walk away and don't look back. I can assure you that they are a pile of dung and will break your heart. And, for once, I'm not messing. Get a nice Hiace, or a Traffic(at least all you will have to buy for that is a gearbox). This is based on bitter experience. Pre 01 old models are a good bus, but look awful, but the 01-04's are dung. Pumps, brakes, wheel bearings, engines, camshafts, prepare to buy all or most of the above in bulk. They are a pi55 poor van. I rely on vans for my living, and I've had 'em all, from 96-09 and these era transits are a pain in the hole.

I would choose a pre 00 Smiley than a 01 bull nose. Parts for smileys are dirt cheap and most service jobs you can do your self with a basic tool kit.
