Tesco iPhone Settings

    Hi

I just switched to tesco Mobile with my 3GS.

I'm looking for Internet settings for their 3G service. The only thing I can find is the thread by Random in the Mobile/PDA forum but the settings in there are from from before when They introduced 3G.

Their Cust Serv is useless the settings they send are for a Nokia or something and I don't have all the fields required on the Iphone. They "don't know what to do with an Iphone as they don't sell Iphones" They don't do over the air settings.

Also, If i switch 3G on in the Iphone settings, My Mobile signal completely dies and doesn't return until I switch 3G setting off again!!!!

I was on O2 until today and had perfect 3G service and Tesco use the O2 network.

Hope someone can help but would prefer not to get the "Port away" comments without explanation.

    thanks

    From http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=66633990&postcount=12

After sending a complaint email to Tesco mobile Ireland complaining about the lack of good phones this is the reply i got

    "Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you for contacting Tesco Mobile.

Tesco Mobile currently operates as a 2G Network in Ireland, which means that many of the top of the range handsets available on the market today will not work on our Network. However, we are upgrading to a 3G Network during the months of July and August and hope to have a new range of 3G handsets available in September.

If you require any further assistance. Please do not hesitate to contact our Customer Care Team by replying to this email, calling 1749 from a Tesco handset or 089 4200000 from any other phone.

    Kind Regards,

    ***** *******

    Tesco Mobile Customer Care

These means that by September 2010 high end 3g phones will be coming to Tesco mobile Ireland and this could possibly mean that by the end of this year or next year Tesco Mobile Ireland might be getting the iphone YAAY

    Yeah. I seen that post.

They have already made the switch. they no longer provide 2g sims and I have received one ofthe new 3g sims.

I don't have the settings for 3G, except the ones they email you which have all these settings to enter but I don't have the fields in the I phone settings to enter these settings, if you get my drift?

They sell 7 days 3G internet access for €2.99 (320MB)

ya i get you, Id say ring back, if you dont get the settings, escalate to supervisor and keep going up till you get the details. When you do, post them here then in case others want to know!

As far as I know the apn is http://tescomobile.liffeytelecom.com
and both password and username are blank

I entered these but nothing happens. I resprung and rebooted numerous times with no luck..

Connected to Itunes and got the message "Itunes needs to check for an update to your carrier settings" but once I click "check" the message disappears with no result coming back:(

That doesn't look like an APN to me:confused:

It is an APN not sure if it should have the HTTP:// or not. Have tried both with no joy.

Is there anyone on Boards using Tesco 3G successfully on an Iphone????

If so could you check your settings and let me know. Beginning to wonder if I have a dodgy Sim card.

When you put these settings in, did you reboot the phone first. That is the APN you require.

Interestingly, their data bundle is advertised as being for "Island of Ireland" only.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,497 ✭✭✭jarvis

I reset network settings which seemed to reboot the phone. When it came back on apn settings had disappeared from mms and Internet but other settings stayed. I re entered the settings from guil. Re booted again but still no joy

    No.
Didn't want to buy till I knew it worked. They charge by the kb too. And 79c for 50mb. So didn't think you needed a bundle. The bundle is for 7 days so didn't Wang it elapsing while it didn't work.

I don't know, but I would be inclined to buy the 0,79c bundle first to see if I could get it up and running.

I have an 089 here, I will seek it out and give it a lash.

    Just bought a 79c bundle.but same thing!!

Rebooted again now still getting "Could not activate mobile data network"
Followed by " Safari cannot open the page because it is not connected to the internet"

Thanks for the thought any way culabula.

I see from my online Tesco a/c that there was an APN tesco_mobile

Whether or not that is still the case, you will have to try it and see.

Unfortunately my Tesco SIM is the older type, so I cannot check it properly. Must order a 3G one. Did you try the other APN tesco_mobile ?

try your sim card in another phone to confirm if the issue is with the phone or the network.

    Hi jarvis

Do you want the good news or the bad news first?

OK good news first - It CAN be done but......

and here comes the bad news.....
It's a bleedin mess to do it.

    You will need:
    A jailbroken iPhone
be able to SSH into the phone through FTP
edit the "preferences.plist" file on the iPhone (if you need more details let me know)

Then reboot and with some luck you get crappy slow wap internet access.
No email because your using hack proxy but web and most other apps work slowly.

BTW: My iPhone is on Tesco and it is great besides the poxy internet.

This was my thread a while back before I got it working:

    Happy reading

However that post is dated may and they have 3G since august so surely there's another way???

The tesco website says you get wap/gprs on the data bundle and thats all I could get, if I turn on 3G on the iphone I get nothing.

If you want to get going this is were I started:
    http://www.hackint0sh.org/f201/76391.htm#post420362

Copy the plist to your desktop to back it up before you modify (just in case).

Thanks V4, but I don't think I'll bother with that,
. It's mostly mail I use it for. and if it's not 3G I get, I will leave them. Anyone know if anything is stopping me from porting as I only joined yesterday????

I sent this mail just now to their cutomer support:

    Hi

After switching to Tesco Mobile just yesterday, I have mad numerous calls to you re 3G settings for the Iphone. I get the response "We don't support the Iphone"!

I understand this but surely you should still support "Customers".

I have an Iphone and without 3G it is pointless in me being with Tesco Mobile. I spend a lot of money on my phone but I expect it to work correctly.
I have been asking around on different internet forums with no luck, but surely you can save me all this hassle by supporting me to get this working on my phone.

I have been sent settings but they are not relevant. I have used the APN within these settings tescomobile.liffeytelecom.com but it didn't work.
I am very frustrated and I would prefer if you could escalate this issue for me. I don't really want this brushed under the carpet.

I have just left O2 with whom I had constant 3G coverage so cannot understand why it won't work on Tesco through the same network!

Again, I am not looking for Iphone support, I am looking for customer support.

    Regards

My 3G version of their SIM arrived yesterday and I tried to get it to work, just as you have done, but no luck at all. It comes with 0,50c credit so logically I should be able to connect but it refuses to do so. While I have E coverage most of the time, I have seen 3G once or twice on screen, but zilch.

Sorry, but I can't understand why anyone expects support from a network on a phone that they don't provide. If they haven't had training on a particular device, they are as much in the dark as the customer.

Whitrebel. It's big like they have a million phones to know inside out. All nokias work the same. Sony erricson etc. Surely they can have instructions for each type phone. iPhones are hugely popular and if a company wants to expand Market share they could get the settings for this brand and have a bigger potential customer base.

Coolabula. I also got the 3G symbol up twice but as soon as it came up, the mobile signal disappeared and once I opened safari the 3G symbol disappeared and same old story. After mailing them I got an automated response saying they'll get back to me within 24 hrs. That was 3 days ago. Mailed again today.
Getting more annoyed. They advertise 3G but don't say anything about on specific phones. They either have 3G or they don't.

hi i dont have a iphone but i have a sony c510 and the settings i have ::
    Apn:tescomobile.liffeytelecom.com

also a proxy must be enabled for it to connect it wont connect unless you use it

    proxy add:10.1.11.19
    port:8080

it should work after that as it works for me over 3g No problem
let us know if it works :)

Sorry, but now you're just plain wrong. All Nokias don't work the same. The touchscreen phones have a different FW than the keypad ones. Last time I looked at an SE they were on Windows Mobile, now they seem to have Android. Some phones apparently have different versions of android. How would you expect them to react if someone has a Blackberry? They don't sell the iPhone, and until they do they won't support it. I'm no great fan of Tescos, but in this instance they are not doing anything wrong.

The issue here is that their network is misconfigured and their customer support is clueless.

Yes, the iPhone is special in that it does not support the proxy which is required for Tesco (not without jailbreaking anyway), but even with phones that do support it it doesn't work properly. A Nokia 3120c can not get 3G signal (even for voice) in a location where O2 has perfect 3G coverage, it only get EDGE, but at least data works over it. The same SIM in a Nexus One locks onto 3G for voice, but can not connect to the internet, even with EDGE and the same settings as the Nokia (including proxy).

I can't pinpoint a pattern yet, it looks like either some accounts are misconfigured or their service doesn't work with specific phones.

check which carrier ur using, go to settings>about and scroll down to carrier, if it says o2 7.0 follow this

if ya have ifile go to system>library/carrier bundles, scroll down to 02.ie.bundle click carrier.plist

scroll down about 2/3 of the way till ya see
    <key>apn</key>
    <string>internet</string>

replace the internet bit with tescomobile.liffeytelecom.com
then enter this bit under internet and save, let me know if it works
    <key>proxy</key>
    <string>10.1.11.19</string>
    <key>proxyport</key>
    <integer>8080</integer>

i'm on o2 and tried it, got cannot access cellular data so it should work for you, ya can do it with ssh if ya havent got ifile, if ya want i can edit it and email it to you and ya can just replace the o2.ie carrier file

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,497 ✭✭✭jarvis

Thanks guil. I do have ifile but my carrier in the settings app isisted as Carrier 7.0. When I go into carrier bundles Tesco mobe is not listed. I can see the o2 bundle. The fact that tesco is on the o2 network, would editing that plist help?

    Thanks for your continued help.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,534 ✭✭✭✭guil

well does it say o2 7, if so yes edit the o2.ie bundle

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,497 ✭✭✭jarvis

Did it then saved and rebooted. Same thing still happening unfortunately.

download the carrier file i created, i hope it works properly
    http://www.4shared.com/file/0pWPd_lR/tesco_carrier.html
to install it ya can go to itunes and hold shift and press update and select the plist or else use ssh
follow this but delete Hutchison_au.bundle/ 50506 and replace with the one i created and put /27211 at the end
    http://andrew.harrison.org/notes/3-carrier-bundle-for-iphone/

    good luck:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,497 ✭✭✭jarvis

    Thanks guil.
I'm a little unsure how to do it by ssh that link is a little confusing for my little brain.
If I do it via iTunes will it update my firmware to 4.1???
Hope not, although greenpois0n comes out this morning, there's no unlock and don't wanna restart customising again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,534 ✭✭✭✭guil

ok it wont work the itunes way, ya can enable it through command prompt but i cant find the proper code
in cydia search for openssh and install it, create an adhoc network on the laptop and name it anything with no password, turn on wifi on the phone and connect to the adhoc
ya will also need winscp on the laptop

when its all ready to go go to settings on the iphone and into wifi, press the blue arrow on the adhoc connection, it will then display the ip address, take note of it

start winscp, the host is the ip ya just took down, username is root and pass is alpine
click login and then select yes, ya should be in to the iphone root directory
on the right box click / at the top, then go into system and library, ya should see carrier bundles

on the left side go to documents or wherever the tesco_carrier.plist is, then just drag the .plist and drop it on carrier bundles, it install properly cos i can then see it in ifile

i hope to god this works for you

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,497 ✭✭✭jarvis

    OK.

Transferred it to the carrier bundles folder. What else do I need to do to use it.
The other carrier bundle files have an info.plist file too???

After transfer I rebooted. Still the same though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,534 ✭✭✭✭guil

on ifile when ya go to carrier bundles it should be down the very bottom of the list on its own

Yeah it's there alright. There's a Tesco carrier plist I was just saying there is no info plist which all the other carrier bundles have. Didn't know if that was important.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,534 ✭✭✭✭guil

yeah i dunno if it makes a difference, just compare any two and see if theres any difference, if there is change them to suit tesco and then copy it and put it into a folder with the plist called tesco

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,497 ✭✭✭jarvis

Nah. All info plists look the same.
    In settings-general-network-mobile data network.
All fields are blank. I've tried it with bland and with the liffeytelecom apn entered.
