After getting a call from a friend who said theres a doctor on 2fm at the minute scaremongering about the effects whey protein can have on your kidneys.

Can anyone tell me if this is true or him winding me up? Not near a radio and radio streams are blocked from where Im on the internet at the moment.

If it is true will someone with a bit of knowledge please go on and tell him why he's wrong, I could do without everyone going on about it the next few weeks.

High protein diets are bad news if you have an underlying kidney issue. For healthy individuals, especially athletes, protein is good / great stuff.

    It's rubbish.

Please please please let someone bribe Will into calling 2FM with a tray laden with pastries or something. As much as I enjoy him driving everyone on here beserk I believe his talents are wasted and radio is an ideal medium in allowing him to make even more people even more annoyed.

The more I think about it the better it gets, I'm now imagining a loud Australian screaming at a 70 year old biddy on Joe Duffy to shut her uninformed mouth and come back to him with proper peer reviewed studies proving that protein turns mild mannered grandsons into screaming muscle bound rapists.

My gf was listening to this and texted me to say the sweeteners in my unflavoured whey are dangerous.

Whoever the Doctor is...I am pretty sure I could destroy every one of his patients faith in them within 6 minutes....without even hearing the program I can tell you with confidence what the studies are that they are using to make their case...and on that note could take that stupid Princeton animal study on HCFS to pieces...this whole thing is so stupid...I wish we could get all the creatine is a steroid, protein will explode your kidneys, HCFS made me obese and sweeteners gave me a tumor crowd together in a room and I could sort them all out in one go...just wrecks my head that people can propagate stuff that a 30 minute conversation and explanation can clear up....the thing that makes me laugh the hardest when I do get to have these conversations is that fact that I end up having a better understanding of the bad data they are trying to use to support their argument than they do.

my ma still thinks that creatine is medically proven to be bad for you, and that whey protein is likely to be contaminated with steroids.

Thanks lads, I understand 100% that whey is not dangerous as I've been having a shake about once a day for the last few years and I'm still healthy. It just annoys me that they let these people on radio with their completely unfounded arguments and for the next few weeks/months, most of my friends and relatives will be onto me about how unhealthy they are for me.

EDIT: Actually, I'd really appreciate it if someone more knowledgeable than me could post up a few links to studies proving whey/ creatine to be safe? Might help keep the more academic of my friends off my back.

I'm just imaging people ringing in to radio Will now!

(Thick Skanger accent) I lost me jobbb cause of whey protein Will! Them bleedin dpd drivers are bringin it in by the bucket load and fillin the fitness shops with it!!

Really hate this rubbish. Sure, it's like saying 'Running is bad' because you shouldn't go running if you have two broken legs. If you have an underlying kidney issue then high protein can be bad but that's not the same thing as 'Protein is Bad'. Clearly, nutrition is not this doctor's field of knowledge.

+1 to Will Radio. I'd be happy to pay in doughnuts :D
