Anyone else read the Irish Times article on the commonwealth games on Saturday?

Its basically saying international athletes are wusses for complaining about the accomodation in Delhi, that they should know what to expect in Third World countries and that there is a hint of racism to the complaints.

    From what I've heard:
    (i) The athlete accomodation is unfinished
(ii) When athletes arrived there were workers sleeping in some of the beds
(iii) There were stray dogs sleeping in some of the beds (and apologies if this is racist to the Indian canine, but from what I've seen the Indian stray is a good deal mangier than the Irish stray).
(iv) The plumbing wasn't up and running, but the workers had been using the toilets nonetheless, toilets with no running water lets just say....

Now personally, under no circumstances would I stay in this sort of accomodation, and I can fully understand why a professional athlete who needs to be in peak physical condition to perfom would not want to put themselves at risk of disease.

I know there is another major story regarding displacement of peoples to build the athletes village. And i know there is another major story regarding corruption in the construction industry in India, that relates to the state that the athletes village is in. For the moment, am just concentrating on the IT story; why can't these guys do a just a little bit of research. Did the writer speak to a single athlete over there?

The news from the Jersey camp is that their accommodation is, on the whole, fine. The village food centre is close on 5 star and the venues are excellent and, in some cases, much better than they were in Melbourne.

The security is suffocating though and, although the competitors are fastracked through the city, Press, supporters etc. are taking a mad amount of time to get anywhere.

Good to hear. Seems that there were fears over their safety last month...
