Hi lads! Now I'm not old, neither am I in the full flush of youth. Every morning if I have to look in the mirror I see this white freckled blotchy face staring back at me. I was never one for plastering make-up on but I've come to realise in the last few years ....that it is the only answer! So on goes the MaxF and a bit of blusher. I use eye make-up sparingly. Lo and behold the difference is amazing! I could go for surgery..Isuppose but I cant afford it, it would scare the sh!t out of me anyway. How do any of you feel about this daily ritual just to feel normal

I only wear make-up to work or when I'm going somewhere special, like going out for the night or whatever. The only reason I wear make-up to work is when I started where I currently work I wore make-up the first day and not the second. Everyone asked me if I felt ok all day, so I said I'd never come in without make-up on again. On a work day I only wear make-up for other people, when I wear it outside work it's for me.

I wear make up every day! I love how it transforms me!

I wear it for me though and never for anyone else! I did go to work one day with none on and so many people asked me was I sick :(

I couldn't be arsed with much make-up for work - rake of moisturiser and lip balm all right, but just a small bit of eye make-up and off I go.
Going out though, different story. Love applying it - it's a ritual that used to give me a thrill when I first started doing it in my mid teens, and that has never fully left.

I rarely wear makeup to work, of any sort. Just ordinary moisturiser to help the muck stay away from my skin.
I find that if I'm getting too used to wearing makeup again "to feel normal", it's time for me to stop wearing it again for a while. I don't think it should be a default for me.

I like putting it on to dress up or whatever when I'm going out though :)

Haven't worn make-up since I was about 20, really don't see the point.

in my twenties i used to wear makeup daily - subtle, but always. now im 35, i cant be arsed to wear it into work. maybe ive gotten more confident about my looks as ive gotten older or maybe its resignation - i dunno.:p

i wear it if im going out though. because i dont wear it daily, it looks amazing when i put it on and gives me a real boost and i feel great and gorgeous all night.

i dont get the girls that are so used to, say putting on liquid eyeliner every single day, and get so used to the look that they draw the line longer and longer so much so that their line has grown over the years to grotesque proportions, almost up to the eyebrow. same goes for fake tan, they are so used to daily use that deep orange is their norm, and any hue that is not burnt ochre is too pale for them. they need a makeup rehab of some sort.

I love wearing make up. I wear it every day and I would feel naked without it but I'm not so obsessed that I'd be distraught if someone saw me with no make up on!:p

I like wearing it for me, I try and go for a lighter natural look during the week at work, it only takes 5-10 mins to apply some foundation, eyeshadow and mascara. At the weekend then I would use some eyeliner, blusher and lip gloss to jazz it up for a night out.
It's fun to experiment with make up as long as you can put it on correctly and it suits you.

I really like make up, but sometimes I just couldn't be bothered putting any on. My family, friends, boyfriend etc., are all be used to seeing me without make up, so it's no big deal if I don't wear any. I guess I do feel a bit better about my appearance if I have make up on, but in the same way that I feel when I wear a pair of new shoes or my favourite jeans. It's not that I think I need to wear make up to look normal.

I would generally wear make-up, usually a small scraping of foundation and a little powder. My work-place is very warm and otherwise I'd be too shiny! I never wear lip-stick at work, it only ends up on the rim of a tea cup! Some days I'll wear eyeliner and eyeshadow, and occasionally mascara.
I work with the public and I just feel more confident when I have made a little effort with my appearance. Also, I had VERY bad skin in my early/mid twenties so got into the habit of having to wear concealer and make-up, just to cover up my poor red blotchy skin. :o

I never wear make-up if I'm just hanging around at home/popping to the shops/going for a walk. I don't see the point.

I love doing my 'night out' make-up though, it's great fun! :)

I like my lipstick - if I am "doing myself up" I will put on eyeshadow and waterproof mascara as well. I go through phases of wearing nail varnish but I really do not have the time for it for the most part. I do use simple facial wipes the odd time if they count? I do like to dress well at all times though.

Love makeup. Im really pale so need blusher and mascara to make me look awake. I do wear it every day - it makes me feel better about myself and I feel I look more polished with it on - like myself but better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,349 ✭✭✭✭starlit

I love wearing make-up but I try not to wear it daily say I wouldn't wear it around the house like. I try to give my skin a chance to breath a bit! I'd only wear it if visitors were coming, or going shopping, going somewhere for the day or when heading out or on a special occassion.

I see what you mean by feeling more normal after putting on make-up I found that very much when I was going to college and to work. I couldn't not put on make-up on in the morning no matter how rushed my make-up ritual would be! Sometimes I wore it natural and light when going to college and work, sometimes heavy when going out.
I do tend to put on the whole shaabang though! Foundation, blusher, concealer, eye liner, eye-shadow, mascara, lipstick and lip gloss. Then again I wouldn't always wear mascara though. I wouldn't look like a tanned orange though, even if my make-up is heavy just looks more a natural colour. Its to hide my flaws really is the whole purpose of when I started putting on make-up when I was 16. I'm now 25 so just wear make-up when I have to or when I need to really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,698 ✭✭✭✭Princess Peach

I wear make up every day. Not heavy make up, I keep a natural look, but I really don't feel confident without it on. I went to college one day with no makeup and 3 girls in my class told me how tired I looked, when really thats just me! If I am only running out for a few minutes, I'll wear giant sunglasses, no matter the time of day or year, just to hide my make up-less face. I can't explain why I wear make up everyday, but it just makes me feel a lot better.

And I always get freaked out by the first time a boyfriend sees me with no make up:o

I wear make up to work everyday. The only days I don't wear it is if I'm off work and lazing around in my pj's

I wear full face of foundation, eye make up and mascara. I love the way I look with it as I feel my skin tone is quite uneven.

you caan get lipstick that lasts a really long time and wont come off on your teacup! I use MaxF lipfinity & find it good

I wear make-up everyday. At the very least it's eyeliner and some light eye shadow. Usually I wear foundation, eye liner, eye shadow, mascara and brow gel.

I do it because it gives me a bit more confidence, I hate how I look without it, but usually by the end of the day when I get home I usually think I look dreadful anyway

I wear make up everyday except when staying in the house. In the day I wear foundation eyeliner, mascara and some lip gloss but if I am going out I like to do nice dramatic eye make up and nice lipstick as well.

I feel great when I wear make up, without it I am really pale and look almost sick it gives me a nice healthy colour and loads of confidence.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 250 ✭✭Delicate_Dlite

I'll admit it, I don't leave the house without make-up, actually I don't leave my room without it. I recently started leaving it off for my run, but I wear scarf/hat and sunnies when running and rarly meet other people.

I've really bad acne, so full foundation & concealer are necessary. Damn stupid skin! :( I always wear mascara ...rarely liner, only on a night out.

Unless a fairy godmother gave me perfect skin, wild horses could literally not drag me from the house bare faced.

I've never worn foundation or concealer. Days when I stay at home and don't plan on seeing anyone, I don't wear any make-up but if I'm meeting friends or my bf I'll put on a bit of mascara and eyeliner.

For a night out I'll use mascara, eyeliner, eyeshadow and the odd time I'll wear lipstick. Don't like the feel of foundation on my skin and luckily for me, I don't need it as my skin is quite clear and even. :)

I found the same, but lush do a little pot of colour which you apply after you put on moisturise and it's wonderful, and only cost a tenner, I suggest the light yellow, but I would still only put make up on maybe once a week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,312 ✭✭✭Kooli

I know I look much better with make up and it's for that very reason that I make sure not to wear it very often! I just don't want to start thinking of my 'normal face' as not good enough or ugly!

I'd always wear it on a night out, and then for work I'd wear tinted moisturiser probably once to twice a week.

I also had the experience of being asked was I tired when I didn't wear make up to work, but it had the opposite effect on me. It made me wear it less often. People just weren't used to my normal face! It's not like we always ask men are they tired because they have no make up on!

It's not how you look that makes people ask if you're tired or sick, it's the contrast between how you look on two different days.

So I can understand why some would choose to tackle that by wearing it every day, but I went the other way because I never want to risk getting to a stage where I can't leave the house without make up.

On the odd occasion I don't wear foundation, people tend to ask me if I'm ill. It's that wonderful combination of pale Irish skin and dark eye circles, courtesy of a job with undefined hours and untold stress! :o

Every day I throw on foundation, undereye concealer (which I use as an eyeshadow base as well, because my lids are also discoloured when I'm tired), eyeshadows, mascara, sometimes highlighter, and powder. The only difference between my daytime and nighttime makeup is I may go a bit heavier on the eyeshadow or add some eyeliner at night. I rarely wear lipstick; benetint is great for a bit of colour without smudging :)

I enjoy the ritual, too; I don't delve into the question of "do we wear it to make ourselves feel better, to compete with other women, because society tells us to" etc because I have an innate hatred of social psychology (thanks, UCD!). I just know it makes me feel good. I don't care about why :)

I love wearing make up, it's fun and I love buying it and creating different looks with it. I like to think my make up technique has defo improved with time, I was very into block colour and ended up very fake tanned with too much make up piled on when I was a teenager, practice makes perfect though!

Everyone wants to look their best, it's just preference about how much you want to wear and what style you feels expresses yourself. I like a polished nude look but with a bit of drama:D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 43,045 ✭✭✭✭Nevyn

Yeah see the practice bit never struck me as being intresting, honestly I have other things I would rahter be doing with my time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,127 ✭✭✭Linguo

When I say practice I just mean if you put it on each day over the years you naturally get better, not sitting at home practicing for no reason:D

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 16,186 ✭✭✭✭Maple

I always wear make-up to work, concealer, bronzer, mascara and some blusher. I feel better for having it on, more prepared, more business-like, it's a state of mind for me.

Due to a hormonal condition a few years back I gained alot of weight and my skin was absolutely dreadful, I felt so ugly and horrible. I never left the house without full camoflage makeup, it was like a suit of armour.

After alot of hard work, I've lost weight and my skin has cleared up but I don't have the confidence I used to before and still feel that I need the extra touch of makeup.

I wear make-up every day. The only time you'll see me without it is if I'm sick. Concealar, foundation, mascara, eyeliner, blusher, lipliner (sometimes), lipgloss. Only takes me about 10 minutes though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 867 ✭✭✭giddybootz

i LOVE makeup!!! the works like!! In work i have to wear a full face of make up and they like the smokey (brown or grey) eye and red lip look. out side of work i like to really experiment with my make up and can be a bit wild on a weekend night!!

I do enjoy a break though to let my skin breathe especially as most nights i just splash some water at my face to remove my make up so it doesn't really come off till my shower the next morning!!!

I find playing/practicing with make up really relaxing while listening to some music if im at home bored.

Have never worn makeup, except for a few functions and the debs, never wear it on a day to day basis, and don't plan to yet! Don't own any either, and practising really does not appeal to me, knowing my style sense I'll end up looking like a clown the first couple of times! :D

Well, as Linguo said, 'practicing' with your make-up doesn't mean sitting at home in front of a mirror day after day trying to perfect your make up!

I started off at 18 with just with a bit of tinted moisturiser & maybe eye-shadow on a night out. When I found it wore off quickly I began using foundation. I eventually branched out into face-powder too as I'd be shiny (sweaty!) looking when working. I often used to get free lipstick when I got foundation so tried out a few shades of that. I started using compact make-up and concealer because I got bad acne in my early twenties. Occasionally, for things like weddings, I ventured to try out eyeliner/mascara. One birthday, I got a 'highlighter' for a present and used it sometimes. And earlier this year I had a boots No.7 voucher and bought the cheapest thing I could find, which was blusher.

I gradually built up a knowledge of what works for me and what doesn't, from my late teens to my mid/late twenties. Occasionally trying something new or experimenting with different colour eye-shadow. I'm not obsessed with make-up and would leave the house without it, but I've played around with it over ten years or so and learned like that. So it's not like practicing piano scales for half an hour a day, or anything like that! :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,802 ✭✭✭beks101

I was never really a make-up person, but in my late teens/early twenties I developed really bad acne and literally could not look anyone in the eye without my armour of foundation/concealer/blusher.

I've recently done a treatment that has totally cleared my face and my skin has never been as blemish-free as it is now so I find it really refreshing and somewhat thrilling to be able to leave the house without spending a half hour getting my 'face' on!

I do feel better with a little makeup as I love how it evens out my tone and highlights my features, so generally my routine is tinted moisturiser, bronzer, a bit of eye shadow, liner and if I'm aRsed some mascara and lip gloss.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,469 ✭✭✭Pythia

In the same way that I like to choose different clothes each day and not look exactly the same all the time, I like to choose how my face looks and be able to change it up. You can do such amazing things with make up and the best thing is, at the end of the day, you just wipe it all off.

Some people think it's some kind of badge of honour not to wear make up and others automaticlly assume you're less intelligent for wanting to wear lots of it. People don't seem to be against wearing bras (which perk your breasts up against how they naturally look) or dyeing your hair so it's interesting it's against make up. I love wearing it, I can look how I want each day and obviously this makes me feel happier.

I would never wear make up for anyone else, everything I do is for me and me only. If someone else likes it too then great. I would often put on make up even if I didn't leave the house all day. I do feel very sad for women who can't go down to the shop without wearing it though, or women whose husbands have never seen them without it. That's kinda scary isn't it?!

i dont wear foundation, creams and all on my face except for sunscream of course, i only put make up on my eyes and chapsticks on my lips and thats all, ense why i have a good skin;)

weekends the only time i have make up is when i forgot to take it off the night before... late nights;)

No problem not wearing make up around guys, never had comments of me looking different except being natural looking really.

I think make up is an individual thing, some likes to have a lot, some less and others none, its like temporary Arts if you think about it.
remind me of a very early flight few months ago, talking about being in the plane at 5am pretty much, was seating next to a couple and the girl had the most make up on her face that i have even seen, talking full on disco style and still put some more on before landing at 8.30am.. THAT i cant understand.

I like makeup if I am going to a nightclub, or to a wedding/birthday/other special occasion. I find it very hard to get foundation to suit my skin though, without becoming dry.
I used to wear all kinds of makeup during my teens, makeup that was too white, makeup that was too orange:pac:, but also lots of really colorful sparkly eye shadows and lip glosses etc.
It can be loads of fun to play around with occasionally, but I would never wear it every day, because I would hate to be in the situation where I was almost unrecognizable, or people thought that I looked sick or tired without it.
I have fair skin too, but everyone is used to just seeing my bare face everyday, and I'm happy with that. I would hate to think people were saying "oh doesn't Little Acorn look rough today", when I was just showing my natural face.
Also, I find that it makes more of an impact when I actually do wear makeup for a night out, than it would if I just wore it everyday.

I would like to find a nice foundation though to suit my skin though, cos as I mentioned I do like makeup sometimes, and it would be nice to have one for whenever the mood to "dress up" strikes me.:)

I can see why some people like wearing it everyday too. I used to myself until late teens. It can just be fun, or a routine for some people, don't see anything wrong with that either.

I have the same complaint, a makeup artist recently recommended MAC Face & Body to me. It's water based so doesn't try out your skin. I've used it once and thought it was very lovely. :)

Thanks Maple. I have been considering trying colourstay because of all the good reviews, but the fact that you mention that the MAC one is water based interests me. I will definitely see if I can get some samples to try it out.:)

I wear a full face of make-up everyday to work, though it looks natural rather than like I've slapped it on. Wear primer, foundation, loose powder, bronzer, blusher, eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara and a bit of lip balm. Sounds like a lot when I see it written down like that! Takes about 10-15min every morning in front of the TV.

Try to stay make-up free one day a week if I'm just dossing round the house or only popping to local shops.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 457 ✭✭Celtise

I hate applying makeup and only really got into wearing it when in college due to peer pressure. Now I still hate putting it on and never do anything different other than foundation and eyeliner (natural black long eyelashes lucky me) and it probably looks crap most of the time but I feel naked without it still. :(

I wear make-up everyday, depending on my mood sometimes I will do it light and natural or a bit more heavier and glamourous. Also it depends where I am going! Only my very close friends have seen me without make-up, I would feel strange leaving the house without it. I guess it's just a habit now and a sense of security if that makes sense!!!

I wear makeup everyday except perhaps at the weekend if I wasn't doing anything. It takes about 10mins every morning and is as essential to me as having a shower or brushing my teeth.

I started using bare escentuals mineral
makeup instead of liquid foundation earlier this year and I'm converted. It's so much nicer on my skin. I don't fall into the Irish trap of wearing a colour too dark and keep it the same as my pale skintone.

I really dont like wearing makeup as I sweat a lot and it runs off. I used to wear it on nights out but now that I dont go out at night except once in a blue moon ( and even then I dont bother) Ive no need to buy any. I think the last mascara I bought was about 6 years ago. The only thing I do is moisterise.

to be honest Im amazed there isnt more people who dont wear it.

But saying that I dont take much pride in my appearance and it would be nice to care about my self image more.

I wear make-up every day but it's normally pretty minimal
foundation mascara and of course my eyeliner!

have taken to leaving the lippy at home and just use vaseline

If I'm going out then it's a ritual and I love my dramatic eyemake-up!

Gotta say I'd feel naked not having some coverage:o

From when i was about 15 i wouldn't be seen dead outside the house without makeup because of my horrible acne. Earlier this year my skin clearned up soooo well because of medication. Now i wouldnt be seen dead hiding my lovely skin behind so much makeup during the day! During the day I just wear mascara and off I go. A night out though I love dolling myself up.. really makes you feel like iv made an effort :)

I wear make-up to work every day, simply because I work in a professional services firm and I think that it's important to look professional. I wouldn't go to work with my hair a mess and my shoes scuffed and my clothes unironed .... and similarly, I wouldn't go to work with dark circles under my eyes and looking tired and with blemishes or spots showing, when that sort of thing can easily be covered up by spending just a few extra minutes in the morning applying make-up. I think that when you're dealing with clients, and indeed colleagues, it's important to look polished and professional. I keep my work make-up quite neutral, but I look a million times better with it on. I can't imagine going into work without make-up on; I'd feel a lot less confident. And it's not just in my head ... I can't help but notice when other people at work aren't looking their best, and I'm sure it goes both ways.

Outside of work, I usually wear make-up too. It's just nice to look your best at all times, and the fact is, I do look better with a little bit of natural-looking make-up on - and you know, so do most girls, even though some might deny it! Practice makes perfect ... it only takes me maybe five minutes to throw on my "everyday" make-up, it gives me such a boost and makes me look and feel so much better and healthier.

On a night out, it's fun to have a couple of drinks and spending ages doing my make-up with my friends, and going a little bit mad with the eye make-up etc! It's just one of those pre-out rituals from when we were teenagers, it's sometimes the best part of the night because you can actually talk properly and catch up on all the gossip, while robbing each others make-up and straightening each others hair!

On a side note, I always think it's hilarious when guys rant about how they love the "natural" look; they love girls who don't need to wear make-up. It's not that they don't need to wear make-up - it's just that they've gotten very good at choosing the right make-up and knowing how to apply it! ;)

i used to wear full face of make up every day but now i just limit it to mascara and eyebrow pencil ( i look like a thumb without it)
For the first time I can say I'm content in myself and still fell pretty without it :)

when im going out though love the smokey look :)

I wear foundation and powder every day, unless I'm literally just popping out to the shops or something. Looks really natural, but the skin on my cheeks goes red when I'm cold...warm....laughing...crying....so yea I feel a million times better with it on! Never use eye make up during the day though, lucky to have dark thick-ish eyelashes. Plus I often wear glasses because I can't be bothered with contact lenses at 8am, so it's hidden anyway!

Going out though....I loooooooove eye make up!!! The more dramatic the better :D It's taken me ages to get somewhat good at applying it though, practice makes perfect!
