One Month Car Insurance?

Is it possible to get car insurance for a very short period like one month?
My current car insurance is about to expire very soon and I need to renew but I don't need a 12-month policy on this car. I am thinking about maybe selling the car in three weeks or so and then going without a car for a few months before buying a new one.

Is it possible to get a policy for just one month?

I don't want to just take out a regular 12-month policy and cancel it one month later since I don't trust any insurer to refund the entire 11 months. My current insurer wants 30% of the twelve months upfront for direct debit and I doubt they will refund this.

There's plenty of threads like this already if you search 'temporary insurance' or something similar.
I wasn't aware of any (I looked into this for myself already) way of getting temporary insurance in Ireland. It is possible in the UK, however.

Even if you were silly enough to pay the full year despite the fact you were intending on cancelling... why would they NOT give you your money back?
You're entirely within your right to do so.

Anyways, it's a bit wasteful but you could set up a direct debit for monthly payments and then cancel it when you're done with it.
You will definitely lose out on some money because, other than raising the yearly quote up a little (as they're getting it in installments rather than all in in one go), they charge you the first and last month of the year as the first installment as far as I know... as a bit of a deposit.

Therefore, you may as well keep the car insured up until the 2nd month and then cancel it rather than cancelling it after just 1 month because you'll be paying for the 2nd money anyway.

Most insurers will insure for periods of 1,2, or 3 months. The relative premium may be higher, though.

If you are planning to be without a car only for a couple of months, why then would you like to cancel your policy...

What you should do is to suspend it. Depends on insurer, but I was suspending my policy few times for a couple of months, and what they offered, was 25% of premium during suspension period and they'd keep fire and theft, or 10% of premium to stay without any insurance.
If you intend to stay without car, just go for second option.
During suspension period you still collect you NCB.

I called my existing insurer and a few others and all of them said they don't insure for less than 12 months. One suggested paying the entire 12 months then cancelling but you would only be refunded the remaining amount after a few months (In other words if you cancel after 1 month then you won't be refunded 11 months).

I presume I would have to cancel my policy since I would no longer own the car and I cannot be insured as the owner of a car that is no longer registered for me as the insurer may view this as fraud.

Perhaps I may have to rent a car for a few weeks then to stay legal. Just had a look at Hertz's website and there are no prices. Have to see if any of the others have prices listed upfront and that they are reasonable (probably not though :( )
