Hi, my father has a 2.75 acre field which a local farmer gives him €160 a year for to get two cuts of silage off. The farmer pays to get it cut & wraped, my question is who is getting the better deal, my father or the farmer? Dont know how many bales he gets each cut. Thanks,

Okay, a bit more info. The lad who takes the field gets roughly 40-45 bales so how much does it cost to per bale to cut, bale & wrap and how much do bales make these days?

The lad taking it is makin more. Possibly selling the bales at 40 euro a piece. About 11 euro to make a bale of hay and 15 for silage and supply wrap.

If farmers could sell silage at €40 per bale, then we'd all be millionaires. Silage is plentyful this year and can be bought at less than €18 per bale around here at the moment.

OP. I buy meadow by the bale. I pay the land owner €7 per bale. He fertilizes it. I take 2 cuts off it. The deal also includes me letting my cattle graze any grass that grows on it in the autumn - they usually get 2 eatings on it.
I've never seen 2.75 acres produce 40 - 45 bales in my life. Its most likely to average 9 bales per acre in the first cut and 5 bales per acre in the second.

Overall you're not getting a bad deal give or take €20. They guy that's cutting this probably doesn't gain an awful lot from it as 2.75 acres is very petty to have to bring a round baler and wrapper for. If they guy causes you no hassle and treats the land right, I'd be happy with it.

:) Thats what my father says.........

I thought we were losing out a little because he was paying us €160 for only 1 acre for a couple of years now untill we got the extra 1.75 acres a while back & yet the price stayed the same. Well if the father is happy then I am too.. thanks.

Oh, while I'm at it, is there anything else we could look at doing with that size field that would bring a few bob instead of the bales of silage?

Keep it for yourselves and get a contractor in to cut and bale and sell the bales. If silage is expensive, like last year, you could make €400 profit. If its cheap like this year you could break even.

two things that stand out in this thread to me are bales makeing 40 euros i wish, and someone else never seeing 2.75 acres producing 50+ bales in a year, thats were i am going wrong spreading fertilizer.

Well there are a few variables in this i think....
-Any other interestd parties, whats access like?
-How good is the land, when did you last reseed/soil sample etc
    -Who does the fertilising
-Say he's getting 45 bales, minus costs id reckon if he'd have a few euro per bale he'd be lucky realy, well in an average year atleast.
-Are they his own use or does he sell them on?

I personaly would push him up a bit, then again he could say no jus decide takin the field aint worth the hardship
