About 28 years ago I was swimming in a lake with friends and as I hit the bottom of the lake and I found a sword that my friend has kept for the last 28 years. (ACCORDING TO HIM, I DONT REMEMBER THE SWORD)

I am trying to research the sword with no luck. it has made in spain on one side and it says toledo on the other. It looks like its been around for a long time. I can tell that it is a real sword and not the made in china crap that is everywhere as it has the weight and feel of being real and I can look at china stuff and can tell the difference.

the handle is a gold color and the blade is black, there is a funky design on it (in the handle) that kind of reminds me of OLD wallpaper and the blade has about 8 inches of engraving. at the ends of the handle there is almost like a 3 leaf clover on both sides. I also see on the handle a lions crest and a castle engraved in the handle too.

The sword in its entirety is from tip to tip 29 inches. it also has a funny looking Y on one side of the blade and a F on the other.. Does that mean anything? have you see one like this before? I have to believe based on age that it is authentic. Can you perhaps guide me in the right direction? there are no local musuems that I can go to and the find spot was nothern WI USA and I am in southern IL. ANY IDEA?

I discovered a very similiar sword it was called a alfonso x ordimential by marto bronze which was 99. eruos. However they were close but the castle on mine is not the same on theres (my castle is a old castle and theres is a toothpick design) plus the design on the blade was completely left/right field, the blade on theres was silver and mine is black. I could tell ( I assume) that if the one that was online was the relica (which it says it is) then it would only make sense that mine is not a relica. im no brain surgeon but thats my guess so any info anyone could give me would be great.

    Hi,

You do have to ask yourself 'how old can a sword that says "Made in Spain" be?' And 'under what circumstances would a Spanish sword maker inscribe it on a sword?'.

There is no escaping that this can really only have occurred with a relatively modern piece made for sale to the tourist market.

A working sword, or even a relativery modern military dress sword, would carry makers marks and a Spanish one would have the inscriptions in Spanish (though even 'Fabricado en España' would be pretty much an indication of relatively modern manufacture).

Its a modern replica called "San Fernando" possibly manufactured by Marto of Toledo..who are still making them to this day.

How about this old sword. Anyone have any ideas on this one. On the blade it says Made In Spain with an old castle above it. My husband found it about 45 years ago. I have pictures but can't figure out how to get them on here.

Without pictures you're wasting your time but anyway, anything like a sword that says 'made in x' is very unlikely to be of much value. Sorry. :)
