Off to the motor tax office to pay car tax and I can't find the registration cert for the car. I seem to remember the form stating that its needed but is that actually the case? Can't do it online as there's a period os non use declared.

you dont need the log book if the car is already registered in your name but you do need it if any of the details have to be amended like the address or change of engine and so on. You will be on the computer already so no need for it. You will need a curent insurance cert, completed application form stamped by gardai if you are not paying arrears if vehicle was off road and the fee for the road tax. Hope this helps you

Cheers jeanpaul, nothing has changed and I've had form stamped by the local Garda station so I'm going to risk it ;)

Went and taxed the car this morning, no need for the registration cert, even though its says its needed on the instructions for completing the form!

I never have to bring mine but it may vary from county to county.

If this is the case, would I be able to tax a potential new car if the dealer is registering it in my name online? Or do I have to wait to get the cert seeing as it will be taxed first time in Ireland being an English import?

Hi, You can tax it on line. Once its registered the last 4 digits of the chassis number become the pin number. You only receive the log book ( licence Cert) after the car has been taxed for the first time.

Ive never hear that before! Ok might try it online so once I get the chassis number. Thanks.

The last 4 digit of the chassis number as pin only applies when the car is taxed for the first time after been re-registered from imported vehicle. After that the motor tax office send you out a renewal notice with a different pin number each time.

You would be doing well to find a local authority who would refuse you at a counter with a wad of cash in your hand.

Most dont care if the vehicle is registered, insured or nct'd.

Iv you have the renewal form filled up properly, complete with insurance details, then that's all you need (no need for vlc or insurance).
