Was listening to Sam Smith on TodayFM this morning and he had Mary O'Rourke of FF on the panel. She called out for a general election, disagreed with her partys "hold on" stance and thinks it would be wise that the party come out and call for a general election with the mandate being the budget and the four year financial statement to the EU. She thinks this way all party's have a fairer chance and better way of saying how they will go about saving the economy etc.

She also said that her party wont be happy that she said this, as they don't agree and that the full details of how bad the country is, ie the books, needs to be disclosed in confidence to the opposition party (parts in confidence, not all, due to the market being very unstable etc) so they can put a proper plan forward.

Not a bad idea, it must be said. Iv always felt nearly full disclosure so opposition can mount a proper "This is what we will do to save the country" and let the people decide whats the best way forward. It will force Labour to come out and show what exactly their wish wash policies can do for the country, it will force Fine Gael to prove that their plan they keep talking about will work based on the figures, and it will interestingly cast a light on Sinn Fein who have a radically different idea then the rest of the opposition to come forward with their exact plans.

Fair game tbh. But, never going to happen.

I'd rather wait till early next year, which is when I think the next election will happen anyway.

Legislation on Corporate Donations is due before Christmas, I think this is very important, a White Paper on political reform is also afaik due around Christmas. After this I couldn't really care less but the above are important long term.

I think FF will introduce a budget in November/December, the opposition who have access to the Dept of Finance will have to put up their own views, Lenihan will move to get rid of Cowan in early January and a GE will, I hope be in March.

Is MO'R acting in the best interests of the country or her extended family?

Mary O'Rourke on the radio is the equivalent of a Paul Gogerty, Simon Coveney or Dan Boyle tweet.

Basically Mary if you want an election all you have to do is vote against the Government, SIMPLES!

I keep saying it. FG / LAB want no part of government until after this budget has gone through. Frankly I don't blame them. They do of course have to pay lip service to wanting a GE ASAP. I wouldn't want any gov to implement such a budget after only a month or so with access to all the figures. I've no doubt FF want to share / pass the responsibility and then re-group in opposition for a few years.

Frankly there should have been an all party budget task force in operation for 3 full months before budget day and then a General election early next year. I know it wont look good as regards stability internationally but if a GE is called anytime soon then the budget must be scrutinised for months across all parties before implementation. Get it right, even if it means postponing it a couple of months. FF would also need to work as a shadow government assisting the new government in every way during the first few months of the new government, briefing the new gov on all the players internationally and giving the new gov a warts and all explanation of what exactly they are in for.

ha ha ha ff and loyalty it's all about self preservation now

Whatever about self preservation, for the good of the country an election should be left until 2012. You dont want those people in FG getting in on promises and then only to go back on them. It just wouldnt work if you know what I mean.

id love to see her hanging from a lamp post...they will all be acting like its not their fault the economy was destroyed by treason .. remember the Berties Team tags on election posters in 2007 , then remember how small they had Fianna Fail printed on local election posters..

the sooner we show decisiveness the better...a budget in the current climate(gov unlikely to serve full term and gov parties expected not to be returned) is not going to have the required effect on the Bond Gods..we'll still look awkward.

hold an election and make fiscal projections in a new term.

I'm beginning to think I woke up in an alternative universe this morning; firstly agreeing with Sinn Féin and now agreeing with Mary O'Rourke ????

Mind you, as others pointed out above, I reckon her stance is more an attempt to get a certain hopelessly incompetent relation of hers in as Taoiseach rather than a genuine effort to give the country what it needs.

Tiny! You'd hardly know the FF candidates in the local elections were in FF from the size of their logo hidden at the bottom right of the posters.

You would have thought that it was obvious that it is just that, surprised it has lasted this long tbh.
