Right thought this could be a novel idea. Over your running career (be it long or short) what is the single most important piece of wisdom you have picked up? The idea is to compile a list to impart on each other and new runners coming to the forum

So Here goes one piece of advice per member so make it count:D

Ecoli - Training paces are based on current fitness not time target time

Actually listen to your body, because if you do not, it could catch up to you in an instant flash. Just because your programme on paper calls for 6 miles does not mean you actually must do these 6 miles if your body is telling you to slow down and rest.

To finish a marathon you must get to the start line injury free and fresh.

My best advise was about the marathon and it was something on the lines of it's not a sprint but a marathon so take it easy in the early part of the race as you'll need the energy later.

Here's a link to Hal Higdon Quotes: RUNNING WISDOM.

I like the one about "Distance runners keep it up longer":D

HardyEustace|Never forget why you started running in the first place, for the love of it, for that feeling of satisfaction when you've finished a run when everything else has been crap, when you get to hoover out your head, because NOTHING is ever as bad after a run, that feeling when it's lashing rain and bits hurt but you've still finished your run, when it's going so right and you feel like you could run forever, for knowing you're a nicer person to family, friends and just everyone in general because you've had a few minutes to yourself to sweat things out and figure out things, for just getting off the couch and running, for getting to know where you live in a different fashion, for running along and just feeling good, for making fantastic pals, for being around very positive people, for knowing that if you do nothing else at least you've run a few miles, for setting goals and achieving them, for getting goals and then the fun of setting a few more

Hi all, New to the boards tonight. Love reading the different views on all topics. Best advice is to have confidence in REST. The more you do, the more you want to do. A REST day in more important than a "hard session". Happy running!

No disrespect to CoolRunning intended, it's just that my own experience is different and I thought a different viewpoint is worth mentioning, even if it means conflicting advice.

Ill leave you guys with two:

    - The key to long term success as an distance runner is 'Patience' & 'Consistency' and staying injury/illness free. Keep the ball rolling, momentum is the backbone of progression.

    - There are no shortcuts to success as a distance runner, perseverance is paramount and belief in yourself/your coach/your training.

A guy called Tim Noakes is one of tht worlds leading exercise physiologists and a specialist in running and particularly endurance running.

    He says:
Thus it is the author’s argument that supposedly scientifically-proven but, in reality, seriously flawed opinions became
the accepted dogma, with eminently foreseeable and predictable medical consequences including the deaths of otherwise
entirely healthy humans. Tragedies could perhaps have been avoided if athletes were simply told to drink according to
the biological controls that drive fluid ingestion in all other creatures on this planet. Specifically they should be advised
    to drink to thirst
    , that is, ad libitum.

There is an excellent and scientifically based article here that cites teh relevant studies.
