Out of all time, not just in the last couple of years. It appears Nas, Biggie Smalls and Jay-Z are the main candidates mainstream wise, all of them as well proclaimed themselves as the King.

A bit more underground you have Big L, Rakim, KRS-One, Big Daddy Kane, etc.

I think Jay-Z is the King Of New York. Reasonable Doubt is an ATG, he kept releasing good-quality stuff, keeping his rhymes top notch. BP3 might have been lacklustre but he has had ten No 1 albums and most have definitely been good.

jayz, but in fairness 50 had ny locked down from 03 to 07, took over the underground scene and blew up huge mainstream, i think its swung back jays way since the success of bp3 even though it was an average album it still had huge comercial success , nas is strugglin and has been for years but he done his thing too.

but the overall king i think is biggie, even though we didnt get much material from him i think he set the bench mark in his short career maybe thats why jay claims he's the best rapper alive and not the best point blank.

the crown switches heads always has.

    I weep for the youth.

    Neither.
The King of New York thing is a load of bollocks made up by magazines to sell copies.

Ask people on the streets of brooklyn and they will say anyone from Jigga, Kweli and Kane to Fabolous and Joell Ortiz.

Go to Queens and they will say Nas, Q-Tip, Progigy, 50 or LL.

Go to Long island they'll say busta and Rakim, Staten island and they will start naming WU members.

    It's extremely subjective.

As for who is the best rapper? Neither of the two you named, I know much anyway.

true but who do you think is the best?

if there was a poll jigga and biggie would come out on top hands down, but maybe if there was a poll where just new york heads vote it could be different but biggie would still probally come out on top i think

Mainstream wise, the 3 mentioned in the OP are most likely the most popular

personally, my favorite NY rappers are Kool G Rap, Pharoahe Monch and Ghostface Killah

Rakim is my favourite, atm. Never even heard of him before a few months ago, but think he's class.
