    Hi Folks,

Currently selling a car and somone has called up looking for the chassis number to run a check on it..

Is there any harm in giving this out or is it a standard request?

Its a 2005 520 if that makes any difference.

A quick google brings up things about getting keys cut based on chassis number ect.

Looking for advice and sorry if its a repeat question

    Cheers

I recently bought a car and requested the chassis number its a pretty obvious thing to ask for if you are running a check on a car.

I can get you the chassis number of any VW/Audi car in the country be just walking up to it and looking at the window, you can't get keys from a main dealer with out the chassis number/VLC and proof of identification.

If I was buying a car I would ask for the VIN (chassis) number. The reason being is that I would want to do a history check on the car with motorcheck/cartell or call the dealer that serviced the car. The VIN & registration are needed to do it properly .
I suppose they could order key for the car from the VIN, in my experience parts departments tend to be lax on looking for documentation when ordering keys. That said the ones I've used in the past have known me from going in regularly.
If you are a bit worried about giving it out to them ask them for a phone number that you can call them back on as you don't gave time right now to get it, preferably a landline. Or just be completely honest with them & say you are nervous giving it to them & that you would like a landline number from them for peace of mind.
It would be a shame to miss a sale at thus time of the year.

Does the history report not show the chassis number?
If it does, isnt it enough for any buyer to then come and inspect the car with report in hand.

Nope, you input the VIN into the report and it confirms it matches the file. Its a normal thing to give out when selling a car.

no wouldnt give it out there is no need for them to have it....he can check up on your car online with your reg without the chassis number

You cannot do a full check without the VIN and many of the car check "warranties" they offer are only applicable if the VIN is inserted. I do ask for it when checking a car online and I fully expect to get it, a seller that withholds this info is IMO either a ignorant of the relevance of the VIN or selling a cloned / cut'n'shut car.

Can you explain exactly what your issue is with giving out the VIN of car you are selling and what do you think the VIN is for? All this checking and data is no good if we dont use it!

PS: We seem to have 2 threads on the same issue.

If someone came out to look at it and was on the verge of purchase but wanted to run a history check prior to purchase I would give it. I wouldn't bother giving it to someone calling me to inquire about the car without seeing it first.

Oh yes but I remember now that a few years ago cartell allowed me back in to enter the VIN at a later date.

The fact that the car check reports are not printing it on the report then surely shows that they have a security worry with it, taking us back to the OPs question - Is it ok to give it out.

Alot of cars have the Vin (Chassis) Number for all to see on the bottom of the front windscreen. its not a secret.

False, also if you wanted to run a main dealer check on the service history or check for any tech bulletins or recalls you would need the chassis number.

So i see a car in England i like,i fly over to kick the tyres and sure if i like what i see,i'll get the chassis number of the seller and run a check??

Giving the chassis number of a car you are selling is standard fare and to be expected,if a seller with held the chassis number from me i'd walk away from the deal.

Some people (not directed at the OP,he asked for guidance) don't have a clue about buying or selling cars.If you sell a car and think it's ok to withhold the chassis number OR if you buy a car and don't run a full check including the reg and chassis number then you deserve everything coming to you.

Main dealers have a cross reference between the REG and VIN.

Still even getting the chassis number over the phone is a load of crap. The seller is going to read it off the reg cert and that is certainly going to match the records of any history check. It still needs to be seen on the car itself obviously.
That being the case and and if I agree that there is no problem in giving it out to everyone on the phone, there should be no valid reason for the car check people not to just print it on the check results.
If they then were to print it on history check results, there is no point in asking for it and you would obviously be checking the car in person before purchase armed with all info on history check.
Its a bit of a catch 22 but the question remains - why do the car check people not reveal it?

Where a pre-check is useful is if the potential buyer has to travel a bit of a distance to view the car. By getting the backgroung check (with VIN number) done in advance it could save a journey.

I'd be nervous about handing it out to somebody who just called up, especially if it was off a mobile. When I lost my car keys I called a peugeot dealer, gave them my chassis number and had them post me the key without ever showing any proof of ownership or anything, so... yeah...

this is the reason why people look for the VIN before viewing the car, alot of cars are being bought there and then now a days!

Yeah, I suppose people can afford to be more cautious these days.
It was just a request I never came across before.

But dam pink would hate to have lost a sale over it without asking , glad I did and I will be asking he next seller of my new car, when I find it!
