You can get them for $5.99 each from GOG (Fallout 1, Fallout 2). They're €9.99 each on Steam, or you can get them, and Fallout Tactics together in a bundle for €19.99.

You can get the fallout collection ( fallout1, fallout 2 & fallout tactics) for €6 or €7 in maplin iirc

There is a final unsupported patch for fallout 2, it doesn't always install properly over the Steam version.

Also, the American version is better than the one that was sold here due to censorship: there are children in the American version but seeing as you could kill them the characters were removed. This messes up a few quests in the game.

I'd go with GOG, no DRM and the US version.

Fallout 1+2 for storytelling/actual RPG elements I would rate higher than Fallout 3. (Fallout 3 is good in it's own right as an action RPG and does have good atmosphere and has wandering the wastelands nailed perfect, but RPG wise is much weaker)

Fallout 1+2 you fell like you have a bigger effect on the story and you can beat the game in a variety of ways.

A friend of mine once played Fallout 2 with a tank Character with an intelligence of 3. Fantastic in combat, but totally retarded :D.

You only ever had one or two speech choices and both were gibberish that most NPCs couldn't understand. He also got screwed out of a lot of money by NPCs after finishing quests again because his character was retarded by the games standards and the NPCs took advantage :D. He was still able to beat the game though and the developers had allowances made for anyone that did try with character of intelligence 3!

These games are pretty old and Fallout 2 is VERY hard at the start in comparison to Fallout 1. The combat is all turn based, the graphics are dirt by today's standards, the control system is a bit convoluted at times and could have been made a little simpler but for story telling and the sheer number of ways to finish the game very few games today can hold a candle to it.

Any time I have ever replayed Fallout 1 or 2 I find something new or a different way of finishing a quest.

I'd love to play these games, I assume they run on pretty low specs considering they're old, yeh?

Friend of mine started as a female character and tried to sleep his way through the game. Managed to do quite well until he ran out of contraception when he thought it would be funny sleeping with any randomer and died from an STD.

Are there many different charachters to choose from at the start?

No, there are usually 3 basic templates however it is advisable to create the character yourself.
Stats actually matter is this one so you do need to put a little thought into what skills you want to specialise in and what points you assign for your stats.

Still a high intelligence stat with tag skills in small guns, doctor/first aid and speech will get you far in either game.
There is no right or wrong way of doing things (some are much harder than others), but you do need some combat skills.

I ran Fallout 2 on a pentium 120mhz with 16mb of ram back in 1999 so I think you are good to go!

Fallout 2 will def run on a netbook.

Fallouts 1 and 2 were never pretty games, they had a good visual style, but even when they were released they were considered below average on looks.

But underneath the rough visuals are some of the deepest RPG experiences you'll ever have. The number of quests, not to mention the variety of ways you could finish most of them, were stunning.

Not to mention the variety of encounters and character builds. Sink all your points into speech and you could talk your way past almost any fight. Whore yourself out for piles of cash. Get accidentally married, and pimp your wife for cash if you feel like being a jerk. Meet a power-armoured King Arthur, visit the mysterious crash site of a sperm whale (and for some reason, a potted plant) which fell from the skies.

If you like RPGs then you need the first Fallout games. They're still amazing works.

People just have to remember that they are slow games unlike Fallout 3. You aren't going to get instant gratification from them. You've got to sink some time into it. The games aren't about the combat but the amount of options you have and how you affect the world.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,686 ✭✭✭Kersmash

What similarities are there between the world(s) of FO 1 and 2 and the one in 3? Am I right in thinking that FO 1 and 2 take place in a different place to 3? Is the story still the same?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,928 ✭✭✭VenomIreland

FO3 takes place on the other side of America.

FO1's story leads into FO2's (kinda)
FO3's story on the other hand, is a very loosely connected POS compared to FO1 and 2's.

well fallout 2 is still my best ever played game!

Fallout 3 looks really retarted comparing it to fallout2. Fallout 3 city - 5 npcs. fallout 2 city - hundred. i actually felt better atmosther in fallout 2 then 3.

Now to all who want to try out fallout 2.... DONT BE PUTTED AWAY BECOUSE OF THE GRAPHICS! Its 256 colors, but i can tell you: you will get sucked in!

i love how much impact your stats actually did, like someone mentioned: if you were 3 intelect, it ment you were dumb as wood, at the world would actually react to that.

i had a friend, who allways told me that f2 is rubish, once i forced him to play it... i havent seen him for days, and he was replaying it so many times just to find a new interesting way to finish game or find some secret places or npcs...

good old times... anyone remembers your car gone after you had your " business" finishd in NEW RENO? when that happened to me first time i hade a "facemelter" on me :D

It's definitly worth investing time in!

It's the best game I've ever played (Fallout 2 is my favorite of the series), my cousin introduced it to me when I was younger & I played it constantly!

It's not FPS, it's top down RPG. 6 euro is a complete bargain, especially for all 3 games. :)

They do, you will get sucked in after a few hours, I promise you.

The interface takes some getting used to as does the way the games work, you will find the first sequence where you are introduced to the game and combat confusing and tedious :p I know I did, but you get your head around it quick, and it becomes like an enthralling book, you are in that world and the story and situation are real and alive, it gets addictive.

I spent a week in Italy during the summer unable to go outside with the heat, and would play F1 during the time I couldn't do anything, and it was hard to drag me away, you will be up til all hours.

new vegas seems to be a rip of new reno from the old pc games

back to gambling and trying your luck on slot machines, i cant wait :pac:

and then when you have lost it all, time to go pick up your weapons and kill everyone inside the casino and loot it for all its worth, best to leave town sharpish after though...

After diablo1+2 and WoW, the fallout series is probably the most immersive RPG i've played (At least in my case). The first 2 games are really very different from the 3rd, but what they lack in graphics and exploding mutant heads, they make up for in character. Really great games, even by todays standards.

think that quest series in new reno playing off the three big family mob bosses against one another, completing all their quests and then killing them all is the most satisyfing aspect to a game ive ever played

edit; just had a flashback to another quest in the game, u went downstairs in a building and became a boxer, where u cud rig the fights or not... think u could also use metal plated boxing gloves

For Fallout 2 I always went very heavy into hand to hand, I once managed to get to the end of the game without using any guns going purely with hand to hand.

Once you get some half decent armour and a mega power fist there is very little you cant kill with a good aimed shot to the eyes. Topped off of course with a perk or two to make all HtH hits critical, reduce the number of action points to make a HtH attack and tripping balls on jet to double my action points with some psycho to buff my damage resistance to a very silly level.......

Boxing: I once lost my ear in one of the boxing matches in New Reno. Reduced my Charisma by -1 and you got to keep the dismembered ear in your inventory :D.

And his daughter! And if IRC there was an option for the 2 of them at the same time.

Fallout 2 is one of the greatest RPGs ever, but my 1 gripe was those Goddamn Character Creation Trials at the start! Couldn't be skipped & were designed to be way too long.

There was something sickly satisfying about hitting a Golden Gecko with a Sledgehammer & sending it flying 20ft across a room.

    Lets talk about something else.
    Goodbye.

Christ, yes. I can forgive the buggy quests (most of which are fixed in patches anyway) and the dull visuals, but having to play through that temple of trials thing at the start every time you wanted to start from the start was a bit much.

Mmm, violence. I quite liked how the enemies would scream different things depending on where you hit them. There's a certain glee to be had from shooting someone in the face, blinding them, and watching them scream "My eyes! My f*ckin' EYES!"

damn right on that, when i played fallout 2, i was warned: just get over the temple thingy, as game is nothing like that temple part of game.

    It should be removed alltogether...

Started Fallout 2 after reading this thread :). Especially the comments regarding the vault at the start, I thought it was dreadful and sorta just gave up after it but from reading it gets much, much better afterwards I thought id give it a proper go

Just recently started Fallout 1 (bought after reading through this thread) and it's great craic so far, took a while to get used to the controls but seem to have it down ok.

I've a question for any of ye Fallout fans out there...is there any way to "cancel" aggression during combat, basically, apologise and hope the town forgives you?

I was caught stealing from an NPC in Shady Sands and he started a fight with me...of course, Ian (who I had contracted) just shot him dead! I saved there, hoping that some way I could cancel the fight, make some sort of peace offering but they just keep attacking.

Is there any way to accomplish this (apart from restarting from an earlier save) or should I just continue along this dark part? :)

Fair play dude its a classic.

What I used to do was make a character I really liked and then save the game right after the trials & just before you leave the village so if you wanted to restart again from scratch you could make that saved game you default one.

Stick with it there is so much to do in the game, and a lot of subtle tie-ins with Fallout 3

It certainly sounds more interesting than simply "going by the book".

I played Fallout 3 through as a good character with high karma and did all the "good" missions, so I think I might play this one as a bit of a bastard :) Plus, it's more fun, all the diplomacy gets tiring.

Don't just go around shooting everyone. Be a complete arse to them through the dialogue choices and other actions. There's loads of humour to be had.

One of the most satisfying moments I had in Fallout 3 was marching straight into megaton, telling sims to take a hike, then blowing his head off and stealing his hat. Almost felt a bit of remorse when I went to loot his house and saw he had a son...almost. Then I realised later on I could slap a slave collar on him.

    Being a bastard FTW!

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,400 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

My favourite story from Fallout 3 was my friend playing it for the first time. Walked into megaton and saw the sheriff guy and decided he wanted his gun so blew him away. Then things got out of hand akin to the fight scene in anchorman and before he knew it the whole town turned against him and he slaughtered them all. The guy just can't keep out of trouble in games you should see how bad his reputation is in Red Dead Redemption for doing similar things.
