Hello, This is my first post and i hope I'm doing it right.

:confused:We're building a one off house and were naturally thinking of putting in oil heating. We spoke to Calor gas recently and now we're not sure what to do. Calor seem to have a lot of offer to join but I'm wondering about the long term pros and cons. Can you one advise?

    thanks

As you'll see in sinnerboys link, bottled gas is quite expensive compared to oil (gas mains is cheaper however). I think its hard to reccommed it unless you have your heart set on a gas cooker or something. Energy speculators may say otherwise, but I reckon gas prices will rise with oil prices either way.

If you are going with Calor, then forget bottles: you want a bulk tank. Even at that it's a bit more expensive, per kW, however, personally, I prefer it.

Obviously, you can use it for cooking, but also, fireplaces. As a modulating fuel it works very well with UFH heating for example, and LPG boilers are very efficient and reliable. More so than kerosene, imho.

Whilst the extra couple of cent's annoys, over kerosene, the advantages outweigh it, for me anyhoo.

We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Great link Sinnerboy. It answered my question and maybe goes to the root of what people are wondering - which is better for my pocket, Oil or Gas.

Well that link brought me to a PDF, the key info as far as I was concerned was the delivered energy cost per KWh. The comparison broke down to this:

    LPG 12.7 c/KWh

    Kerosene 8.3 c/KWh

I rounded to one place of decimal, but that should be close enough for all practical purposes :)

To me that looks like LPG is 50% more expensive than oil, which solves my problem.

Oh, and if you can get Natural Gas, get it - about 5.5 c/KWh.

If you delve further into the document, you'll see that the efficiency of your appliance means a lot to your eventual costs. I'm off to get my (oil) boiler serviced.

    Thanks again Sinnerboy.
