    Hi Guys,

The girlfriend got the first service done on the octavia today and it is a model that came with variable servicing and long-life oil. It has 18,900 miles on the clock and its a uk import hence all the mile talk. I explained all this to the skoda dealer and he serviced the car (allegedly) using the correct long-life oil. He then reset service trip I was expecting to see something around the 15,000 to 18,000 mark when I checked but instead 9,400 came up.

I questioned this with him and he said it was a mistake and he had to reset it again. This time nothing showed, like it had been removed completely or something. I questioned him again and he said that it will show again when it as around 1500 miles till its next service.

Am I being paranoid or this sound wrong? Does the engine/sump have sensors to detect oil quality or is that a myth? Is it possible they put standard oil in?

If they put long life oil in the car, it's not due another service for 30,000km (20,000 miles). Once it gets close to service time, it will count down from 1,500km - or possibly 1,500 miles on Mls clocks.

Ok so you reckon the dealer was correct. I thought it was possible to check straightaway after it was serviced, for instance it should have showed 18,000 or 19,000 till next service when it was reset. Im guessing all this sensors detecting the oil condition isnt correct then?

Got another dealer to check with diagnostics what they did today and apparently they turned off the service indicator altogether. Why the hell would they do this and not tell me? This is meant to monitor and advise when the next service is due. Pretty pissed off to say the least. Im guessing the wrong oil is in there now to be honest.

I bought a new Audi which came from factory with lng life oil etc. Dealer set my service reminder for 10k miles from new and had a struggle to get them to put it back on longife servicing. It is a scam to bring you in for services. I eventually got VAGCOM which allowed me to set it up myself.

Looking at various settings within the cars memory, there are selections for longlife oil or not, max miles between service etc.
The car itself then reads the oil soot levels, viscosity, oil level, change in viscosity due to temperature etc as well as engine revs used and journey types to come up with an oil change request.
You can assume that dealer filled the car with a suitable oil for fixed servicing & not longlife even though you probably paid about €20 per litre for it so you will need to go for service again in about 10k miles. Even if the new garage got the variable servicing switched on for you, it wouldnt be correct if the slightly inferior oil has been put in at dealer.
Note the fixed interval oil would be approved for the car too just not for extended interval.... My local audi service manager told me there is only one suitable oil for the car. When I pointed to fixed or longlife intervals, and the fact that I had paid for longlife oil yet they set on fixed interval, all he could say was bring it back in when the light comes on and we will etend the interval! This is something I wouldnt be doing as again, I would be pretty sure I didnt get the longlife oil.

So this is commonplace then. Its a bit ridiculous that they can get away with charging for the dearer oil. I will do as you advised and change the oil after the 10k. Better to be safe than sorry as Im not sure whats in there at the mo.
