Will bank officals/TDs/etc ever be accountable?

After todays revelations, it's the first time that I've really gotten annoyed with the government and the future of our economy(even though I've never voted FF in my life). I tended to keep on the positive side and think that "we could get through this, we're a great country!". However, I'm starting to reach the end of my patience.

I want people to take responsibility for the state we're in at the moment. See the example of Icelands PM whose been taken to court for his actions for their situation. He did originally put his hands up and admit certain responsibility for the stage they were in....who in our country has done that??

Why arn't we prosecuting Bertie, Cowan, or certain bank officals? I know Sean Fitzgerald (just to pick someone as an example) has registered most of his property and assets in his wife or families name....but can't they treat it like the criminals assets bureau? Investigate what money came from wrongful dealings and take it back? Investigate a few more TDs, bank officals and contractors and see how that helps our situation.

Why does no one in our country have sole responsibily of any area, so, they can ALWAYS pass responsibility on to many random institutions and never take account for their own actions?

I've edited my post just to focus on one main point - :D I'm not really trying to have a random socialst type rant....but interested in the facts as to why, or as to the legal reasons, as to why not they can't be prosecuted.

The fact that 24% of the electorate would still vote in The Soldiers of Bankruptcy should answer your question.....

Its actually crazy at this stage that no one has been put behind bars. Think about that. Its two years since our economy collapsed due to corruption and cronyism and mismanagement. No only has no one been jailed, no one has even been fired! Not one person. Some like Neary had to go quietly with golden handshakes and fat pensions but thats it!

I think it speaks volumes that the 2 directors in AIB will be asked to step down instead of being sacked. No doubt this is ensuring they get their golden handshakes:rolleyes:

they have been in Iceland, the UK and other countries....but that's what I'm really asking, are we, as a country able to stand up and believe we can prosecute a person because of what they've done, has led to the collapse of our county?

Do we really have to wait for legal precedents before we make our own decisions?

Your points make perfect sense to me, but that's exacally what I'm asking. WHY has no one been jailed been taken accountable?

    Is there a legal reason?

Or have we, the regular citizans, just not pushed it enough?

Would their actions be clasified under treason and who could charge them

well I don't think it would be treason...they wern't willfully looking to act against the nation (well in my mind!) but still, there has to be some corporate offences they could have a trial for?

Let's face it: when the man at the top admitted to having no bank account and 50 grand cash in a safe in his office with no paper trail and all he had to do was step down then there's the problem. The country is stuffed full of people who were quite happy to have some of that 'dodginess' reflected onto them. Hence the hush money pay offs to Neary and Fingers etc. Until there is a proper clear out of the whole of this cronyism, clientelism, parish pump politics this will never stop. The section of the population that never joined in has to shout loudest now. Will it happen?

its not the bank officials fault.
policies and procedures where laid down by senior managers and head of the different banks.
bank officials are in the front line and getting the brunt of the blame and the fury from the public. pity the heads and senior managers of banks dont work in customer service end of the banks

THIS is exactly kind of why I'm asking this question. I have always been interested in politics and the economy, however I admit, sat on the fence in terms of protests etc. In the past few years I've associated it with those who were extreme in views.

Sometimes protests don't achieve the aim they wish too, as they're arranged by, what can be seen as, extremists. I don't want to be associated with that, so I've avoided them.

BUT, after today, I've felt I need to take a stand, however not sure hoe to go about it.

What's the best course of action? Does writing to your local TD help? Does protest help?

I feel like I want to take civil action...lol but not sure how to go about it with a group I feel represents my actual feelings about it.

This is my point from my first post, the blame is always randomly pushed around, i.e "it's not the bank officals problem, it's their senior managers."

Bank senior Managers - "It's not our fault - it's because of the regulators."

Regulators - "It's not our problem, it's because of the governmernt"

Government -" It's not our fault because the banks told us to let us decide what's best for us.....we know how the economy works, not the civil service."

I really just want people or groups to be accountable for their areas. So in future, if something feck's up, we know whoes accountable and in a way, it makes THEIR job easier.

I do agree though, I've had my share of customer service types jobs years ago where I took the brunt off the decisons from above. Not fair tbh.

The best course of action is for you to move any savings offshore. Not to hide them. Declare them. Pay tax. Just get your money out.
