I've been running for years as training for my sailing but a shoulder injury and forced me to pack sailing in for a while and have turned my focus to long distance running. got my first race sunday and am planning on the cork marathon in june to give me plenty of time to build a good base!

I have seen there are a few clubs and associations in cork you can join to get involved in the 5,10k races etc the bhaa seems to do a good series but wondered should i join a club for training advice and people to train with and that type of thing

anyone got any suggestion on which i should join or any advice?
    im in cobh co cork

    thanks

    You have several options.

You'll find a list of Cork AAI clubs here.

There is a club in Cobh: Ballymore-Cobh AC. While primarily a juvenile club, it has a small hard core of road runners and they train regularly. You've probably come across them in your training.

The next nearest to you is Midleton AC

After that there are the Cork City based clubs, including my own, Eagle AC - had to get that plug in :D - In spite of being City based, we have loads of members from across county Cork, including East Cork. We, along with most other clubs, operate a 'Try Before You Buy' policy, so you can try it out first.

As you say, Cork BHAA have plenty of races, including this Sundays run to your hometown! Joining the BHAA is, imho, "a no brainer", however as we're nearing the year end, you might be best waiting until the new year to join. Membership is €10 for the year and races cost €5 each (except Cork to Cobh) and €7 if you're not a BHAA member. In short, if you join the BHAA and run all of their races, it'll cost you €120 for the 20 races, including registration (based on the 2010 calendar & fees), whereas it'd cost you €143 if you're not a member) ...and you're NOT eligible for individual or team prizes if you're not a member. As I said ...."a no-brainer"

    My advice:
    1 Join the BHAA
2 Try out a few of the clubs and join the one that best suits your personal goals.
