It appears that the constitution says an election can be held every 7 years but everyone talks about having to have an election every 5 years.
Does anyone know what law states this?

INAL so I don't know where to go to look this up.

Not exactly, the constitution limits the term of a dail to 7 years, but there is legislation further limiting it to 5 years.

But the sitting government can call an election with 30 days notice.
