engagement ring paranoia..

recently got engaged and himself had the ring picked out and bought for the big day. ive had to have it resized as it was a few sizes too big but since getting it back from the jewellers ive noticed a few things with it but himself says im being too picky and paranoid about it, so I would like to see what others opinions are before I go back in with it.
when i got it back from re-sizing there are scratches on the top of it at the back of the band. its 18k white gold btw. my mum even noticed this straight away. i think this is where they made the cut for the re-sizing but im left with scratches on the top part of the band.
I also see these black speckles all along the back of the ring. at first i thought was just watermarks fom washing my hands with it on but when i buff it up with a piece of tissue and its all nice and shiny again I can still see these little black speckles on the band, tho a little fainter. is this normal? its almost reminds me like its tarnished or something.
    am i being paranoid?

If they damaged the ring while re-sizing, then you need to bring it back. There's nothing paranoid about not wanting damaged goods ...

it sounds like it needs to be re dipped my ring is 18 carat and i was told i would need this done every 18 months to 2 years, the jewelers should do first one free and it should only cost 25 euro

Send it back to the jewellers to get them to repair it. I recently had my own cleaned and they gave it back to me with the diamond loose!! I sent it straight back - have no qualms about it, this is something you will be wearing everyday, no doubt enough was spent on it - you wouldnt accept a new car with scratches would you?

Gold is gold whether white, yellow or rose. Why would you need to get it re dipped? Why would it even have been dipped in the first place? Gold doesn't wear off.

White gold can turn a bit yellow over time, hence the maybe need for getting it dipped again.

A lot of white gold rings are rhodium plated, this can get marked or scratched over time and may need to redipped.

White gold rings are plated with rhodium to give the white gold sparkle, will need to be done every two/three years as it wears off. The jeweller explained this to us when we were buying my engagement ring.
Edit: Sorry Ginny, case of great minds there.

    Thanks again.

It still sounds a little nuts to me though. Would it make more sense to go for platinum (finances allowing of course) rather than white gold and then the re dipping is never going to be an issue?

not really. platinum can look very different to white gold. also, depending on how hard you wear your jewellery [ie, if you only wear it outside the house, or don't have a very hands-on physical job or whatever] then you may never reach the cost of platinum, even if you do have to get it re-plated every so often. platinum=better is not a fair statement, in other words.

Platinum +1 - they dont tell you that white gold has to be replated every 18 months.

what a funny thing to say. who doesn't tell you??? the jeweller? so you/you and your other half are looking to purchase something like an engagement ring and you don't arm yourself with the most basic of information that a 30-second google search could supply you with??? lol!!!! :pac::pac::pac:

Palladium is a great alternative to platinum.

I wasn't saying that platinum is better simply that it could be a better decision in that you don't have to bother with the re dipping. I don't think it necessarily makes for a "better" ring as each ring is an individual choice and what is the "best" ring for one may not be for another. :)

I bought platinum as I had my research done.

lol, great. so why bother posting something like ''they don't tell you white gold has to be replated every 18 months''. it's a wide glib statement, unless of course you can speak for every jeweller in the world... :pac:

Where we got our rings, our jewellers went through everything we needed to know regarding all the different metals and how to care for them. We were probably there for a good hour even though we hadn't committed to buying anything and still weren't spending a lot of money anyway. That was the main reason we bought from them.

There's no big deal with getting white gold dipped in rhodium... I've got a lot of white gold and it's only every couple of years I find and the result's amazing when you do get it done... back to brand new sparkle... which ya don't really get with platinum?

Platinum costs a lot more but it can be a bit duller I think!

In saying that though, it sounds far too early for the op's ring to need to be dipped... sounds like jeweller messed it up and needs to fix it.

Thanks for the info guys. I brought it back in and showed them the scratches and the tarnishing on it.

It was sent to another guy this time who said last guy who did re-sizing did not dip it properly hence why it looked tarnished with black spots/specs.

does dipping it in the rhodium get rid of any scratches or marks on it? or is it mainly to bring out the shine again on the white gold?
i also got it re-sized again as it was still a bit lose..does re-sizing the ring do any damage to it? does it weaken the band or anything? I dont know much about jewellery at all! and these were questions i had wanted to ask in the jewellers but a few times in there now i feel like they dont like you to hang around at all, so i didnt get a chance in the end!

It will bring back the shine and resizing down shouldnt do any damage bar making the ring smaller. Ask as many questions as you want

I don't know about sizing but the dipping usually makes it look nice and new... it should cover anything up but only for as long as the stuff lasts.

I wouldn't take that... stuff like that makes me get stubborn and wanna hang around more :D bring in your list of questions so you don't forget anything
