So just popped into a bank in Galway, as my mother has had a €500 note from month and month ago she wanted to change for €50s...

After standing in the que for the cashier for 15 minutes, i finally reached the window, asked the cashier to change the money, only to be told i had to pay €3????????????????

€3 to change money??? How PATHETIC!!!!

Needless to say i stormed out of there, €500 still in hand.

Why didn't you just lodge it then take it out at the ATM?

They don't make money by being nice?!

Why didn't you just lodge it into your account and take it out at the atm?

Then you're not a customer and they are under no obligation to offer you banking services free of charge.

Go home, photocopy the note, bring the photocopied note into the bank and set it on fire while jumping around it shouting "bad money!"

might work if you live in the middle east (laois maybe:D?)

Thought it would be AIB... I'm sure BOI could survive without exchanging the euro cash for euro cash when it is no loss to them to do it.

I do not see the cost involved in exchanging euro cash for euro cash in a bank.

Worked in a news agents once and someone asked me to give him change of €200, told him I can't break that...

then he asked for a packet of chewing gum... asked him if he had anythign else because i seriously couldn't break the €200.

Also... €500 notes don't have to be accepted in Shops and I'd be hard pressed to know of any that could break it.

Most I ever had in a float for a till was €130.

well, they're offering a service, and you usually have to pay for a service. what if for one full hour people were coming in changing money for free, then the workers would be working for nothing. although the bank pays the wages.

As far as i thought, a bank was a public service.... No shop will change it.

In the meantime, what the hell am i supposed to do to change it? I refuse to pay €3 to breakdown money. That is absolutly crazy talk.

And id be very very surprised if anyone on this forum would willingly pay the €3.

just pay the 3 euro and stop moaning. you say your bank is possibly ten miles away and they wont charge you, take into cost of possible petrol or public transport to your bank plus how much is your time worth?

My brother in law died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 35 two weeks ago (not looking for sympathy) but my point is there are far FAR more important things to be worrying/moaning about that paying 3 euro for a service of convenience!

back to your original problem though, I think the central bank is the only bank that is legally required to take 500 euro notes isn't it?

So you're gonna be stuck with a useless €500 for the sake of €3. Good for you. You stick to your guns. You'll be €500 poorer, but at least you've got your principles.

Presuming they'd upped the withdrawal limits on their accounts ... and had 500 in the account at that time?

Ridiculous charging for changing a note. Banks are pricks.

It's mickey mouse handling of issues like the OP's is stuff that'd have me changing banks. You were wrong to accept that explanation. I think I'd have been threatening them to shut my account down there and there if they tried to pull that stunt on me.

I'm convinced they even short-change you on coin-weighings too. Not even an official charge. Just a stealth charge on mugs. Basically they'll even scab over pennies.

It's only Banks in general, it's not intended for public commerical use, AFAIK.

you should have haggled offerred them €1.50 and bluffed, telling them that you often frequent another bank that charges that amount for that service and that you will not pay above that price, and if asked why you did not use that bank for that purpose, you could reply with " well i was thinking of opening a new account here and i wanted to check out the customer service first, etc" - they'd take your €1.50 then and throw a few forms in your direction. remember, in effect they work for you (assuming you are a taxpayer.)

of course the above strategy should be thought out clearly before entering the bank to ensure that you are not thrown by the situation!

You should have rammed the bank with a cement truck.

    that'd learn em up good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,736 ✭✭✭ch750536

Am I the only one here who thinks this takes the piss? Jeebus Ireland, wake up. Talk about money for nothing.

This is a situation where a bank wants to make €3 in the space of about 10 seconds for absolutely nothing!

Next time you pay in €500 in change, tell them you are charging them €3 for the facility.

    ffs@boards today.

We're to use to getting the ****ty end of the stick here, the majority of people just accept getting screwed these days. Probably why we are in this situation..

The Dutch are notorious for their bureaucracy and lack of helpfulness. I wanted to pull 20 euros out of the ATM at the ABN-AMRO bank but the thing was out of order. I went inside and asked one of the tellers if I could withdraw 20 from my account since the machine was kaput. She told me that the minimum withdrawal was 100. Fine. I filled out a slip and withdrew a 100. Then filled out another slip and deposited 80. She just made work for herself. Bizarre some of these bank policies.

So let me get this right:

You went into a bank that you're not a customer of, tried to change €500 into smaller notes, and "stormed out" when they tried to charge you? If I worked in Tesco I wouldn't expect my discount card to work for me in Dunnes...

Go to a bank you're a customer of, they'll either do it for free, or you can lodge it and take it out of the ATM like so many people suggested.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,252 ✭✭✭deisedevil

3 euro to break down a 500 is much too bloody high. Yes they should charge but that sounds bloody ridiculous and doesn't seem a fair price for handing out ten 50 euro notes, does it?

It's the same with the over the top charges when you miss a direct debit payment etc. they slap a huge charge on you for it that is way above what it actually costs them to deal with it. In England the banks are being taken to court all over the place by people who have been charged too much for certain things and winning their cases. Maybe we should be doing the same in this country.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,584 ✭✭✭TouchingVirus

I'd say the amount is set out in the Fees & Charges document. The OP did have alternatives, like a bank they were a customer of who'd do it for free.

I think prepay sandwiches are too expensive, as are products from O'Briens. I'm not going to take them to court over their pricing though, especially when I can get free sandwiches elsewhere.
