Had a look at the new Volkswagen Passat at the VW Group preview night last night. It is a good looking car. Certainly very much along the same lines as the present one - based on the same platform but with a change in all the body panels. The engines range from 1.4-litre TFSi (122hp) to 2.0-litre diesel with 170hp and the 105hp 1.6-litre TDi will have Band A emissions.

The car will be in Irish dealerships in December - and on sale in January.

the front as a very 'Audi' look about it, hardly surprising.

Does 'on sale' mean that you will be able to buy and drive away, or just order?

Cant see too much new in this tbh, wouldnt even be a fan of the styling revisions! Hardly nothing done to the cabin! This is a far lazier job than was done on the golf in going from mk5 to 6. Whats more, no new engines either!

Its adopted the current Golf/new Jetta front end which I don't like at all.

I prefer the look of my 06 model personally. I suppose this will be the B6.5 then?

    EDIT: More pics here.
The interior is almost identical to my one.

I do to. It reminds me of the 97-00 model for some reason. The interior is almost identical. My missus has a 08 and we were going to upgrade to this model but I think not after seeing that. God its boring....

Edit look at the rear lights. Its a fcukin Skoda superb...

Personally, I think it looks like the same passat with a bit of a facelift. What is the point ?

The mondeo to new mondeo was a leap forward.
The vectra to insignia was a massive leap forward.

I think its just the freshen up it needs. Maybe this one will be reliable seeing as its pretty much the same car and they have had a while now to sort out the many issues

Id say they would have a big revision on those things for the update too though. Surely they have to get on top of the flywheel preoblems soon.

Whats the story with DSG, Does it have the dodgy flywheel?

I dont know about the dsg now. They look really like the superb though. If the superb had led tail lights they would look identical. I think I will be using my new car budget for another A8 or 7 series. They are dirt cheap at the moment in the U.k...:)

Engines were only updated to the current VAG range last year so I cannot see any changes under the bonnet of this facelift model. It's similar to the B5 Passat when it was facelifted and called the B5.5.

I'd still rather have an Insignia over it though.

It was supposed to be a total revamp but its only a facelift imo. I would prefer the insignia too if it wasnt as noisy on the diesel model. The red display for the instruments is very dated I think.

Where's the base diesel model with steel wheels and a load of blanks in the dashboard? As an Irish motorist, I can't really form a valid judgment until I see it, preferably coated with a fair spray of road dirt and some spurious mudflaps bought at the local motor factors.

How cheap is dirt cheap? Ive not seen too many bargains tbh

    Yawn.

It's practically the same car yet VW are passing it off as a new model.

Of course because it's a VW and not a Ford or Peugeot they will get away with this, if Ford presented an "all new" Mondeo when it was really just a facelift of the old car then there would be blue murder about how Ford are too cheap to do a properly new car.

It's a toss up between this and the Avensis to see who makes a duller device for moving people.

Because it is so uninteresting and because of the badge on the bonnet, expect it to be a huge success in Ireland, especially the poverty spec diesel with only 105 bhp and steel wheels:rolleyes:.

I do think it's a bit of a lazy effort from VW, and I'll wait to see it in the flesh before deciding on the styling, but it doesn't really matter what anyone says - it's going to be a sales success for VW.

When Toyota changed the Avensis, we had 1 person waiting for the new model. When Opel brought out the Insignia, we had no one queing up for it.

Currently have 15 orders for the new model, pending confimred VW pricing, and will be pitching for 60+ for a customer against competition. They have the production slots set aside for the Passat for this customer, and it's just a case of which company orders them.

I suspect you are looking at May/June realistically before you can actually get your hands on one fairly easily.

Someone make up a design that they want VW to make seeing as they're not happy with what they're doing.

VW are keeping close to the old design to keep current customers I think. If they made a drastic change they can lose customers but maybe gain new ones. It's a risk.

One of the most drastic changes to a saloon I think would have been the mondeo. Completely reashaped and reborn and look brilliant in comparison to the old shapes and some of their competitors. Not a shoutty car but at the same time they're not dull and boring.

Whatever people think the streets are going to full of them.

Repmobile. If I get to be kept on in my job I can order one of these. Highline would be fairly sweet!!

I dunno. Matte grey, tint the windows, blacked out lights, hub caps, grey and black checkered cloth interior with plastic dash/panels, basic on/off, 1-4, hot/cold buttons and knobs.

All make for an excellent dull car.

The difference is every single thing but the rear light clusters? Windows(all of them) are different shapes, rear bumper is a completely different profile, same with the boot/boot lid.

I would hazard a guess that you can look at todays prices on line and add maybe €500 tops to them. Can't see VW adding any more than that. THey might even be the same price or a few hundred less.

Maximum 2% price increase over current models.

Highline will no longer have full leather as standard - will revert back to the 50/50 Leather/Alcantara the Highline had orginally. Estimated around €700 to upgrade to full leather.

I prefered the 50/50 option actually. The tax is 105 euro on both the 2.0 and 1.6 tdi.

So did I. Full leather looks a little bland or something.

I thought the something was Pikey.:). I have them now in a 08 and there shiny now from wear as opposed to the matt finish you get when new. I hate shiny plastic/leather in a car.
