    I have a 1 litre petrol 00 VW Polo. Car still in great nick. Bought for €1,500 8 months ago. Working up in Dublin and commute most weekends home to Tipp.

    With the new roads I find I have bad fuel efficiency. I reckon the car's cruising speed is about 85km and not the 120km I'd do on the motorway home.

    Ideally in my car I'm looking for fuel efficiency. I reckon I get about 35-37mpg with my current car. When I compared that to some cars it seems that these figures are okay. My previous car was a Peugeot 206 diesel and it seemed to go forever on one tank.

    With the new motorways I'm very interested in cars with cruise control. Top gear mentioned cruise control didn't mean good efficiency. Is this really the case?

    Anyway, I'd be interested in a car from the 5-10k mark.

    My folks have an 02 Golf TDI (red I) and its far more fuel efficient than my car. Also performance wise it is very good. I find it difficult to understand how a car with so much more zip can be far more fuel efficient than my car.

    Anyway, anybody have any ideas?

    Diesel, fuel efficient, cruise control, 5-10k?
