I saw this film for the first time today and I wasn't impressed at all. I didn't like how Zombie approached it, was it just me or did he try to glorify the rejects? I got the impression that I was meant to
route for the rejects at the end against Wydell and somehow cheer for the rejects as they are going out in a blaze of glory.

I'm sorry, but Zombie spent much of the film showing us just how sick these bastards and bitches were, so when Wydell started to hunt them down I was totally routing for him.

It is original, I'll give Zombie that, but I just felt nothing for his storytelling.

I love this movie. It is a complete homage to 70s grindhouse/exploitation flicks and as someone that has watched alot of that particular genre I believe Zombie got it spot on.Its what an exploitation movie is ment to be,violent, expletive filled, loose character development and a very mean spirited tone throughout. Its clear Zombie wanted us to root for the Firefly family which I did. This movie is IMO the perfect antidote to the safe, teen friendly American horror of the last 10 years. The Devils Rejects FTW! :pac:

Nedtheshed pretty much sums it up for me.

I didn't expect to, but I thought it was very good.
Very stylish, some good performances, particularly the guy playing the brother.
The use of music was excellent, especially during the end sequence.
My understanding is that zombie was trying to recreate the look and feel of a 70's exploitation flick, l'd say he succeeded.

Hmmm, I'll concede that I'm not all that familiar with expolitation films.

I didn't mean that I wanted to see a typically cliched ending of the "good guy" surviving/getting his revenge. I just couldn't bring myself to root for the rejects, I detested them, except for Mrs. Zombie of course. ;) :pac:

I mean how do you go from the very disturbing scene of
Otis sexually assaulting the elderly musician's wife
to portraying him as someone who deserves sympathy?

The ending accompanded by Lynyrd Skynyrd's Free Bird was pure cinematic excellence.

I reckon thats the point though, the whole family are reprehensible but (for me) the audience are made feel empathy with the family unit being split up then Tiny making his reappearence, despite being absolute dirtbags, they are still a family that loves and are willing to die for eachother. In theory we should be hoping they get their comeuppance but we kinda dont want to see it.I do love the closing scene though. The soundtrack is fantastic too.

You don't. Or at least, that's what I've taken from the film.

In my opinion, you weren't meant to root for the rejects, and I think Zombie did a very good job of making them quite detestable, more so than he did in House of 1000 Corpses.
I think that the whole point was that they are downright nasty characters, and what makes it interesting is that Wydell is a character who we might initially root for, but ends up being as big a monster as the people he's chasing. It's not so much that any of the characters are deserving of our sympathy, but that none of them are.

Aye that is what I thought Zombie was going for. As I said, it's very original, I'll give him that.

I'm not sure if Wydell became as much of a monster as the rejects. He was just giving some sick bastards a taste of their own medicine.

Agree totally, it was the perfect song for the ending.

Have to say that I loved DDP as Billy Ray in it with "little" Danny Trejo as his partner.

Exploitation cinema isn't for everyone OP, it's certainly not to be confused with traditional horror.
I really enjoyed 'The Devils Rejects' but can see why it would leave alot of people wanting. The type of film making it's paying homage to wasn't mainstream for a reason.
This is a more relevant nod to exploitation cinema than that 'Grindhouse' crap.
