Government chief whip announced it in the dail a while ago. Found out that Cowen was outside talking to RTE when he said it.

How do we know they won't change their minds, or stall, due to the cost blah blah blah, in the new year and drag it out to maybe next autumn.
Imagine a government so unable to multitask as to be unable to cope with the by elections, what a joke.

Hopefully there will be a GE before then and get these FF/Green fools out.....have to agree with unit 1 in that I dont trust them in and they'll change their minds.

Next March, hopefully they don't get anywhere near it, but, if they do, you'll hear "Lookit, with da banks on ther knees and the serious economic situation we need to concentrate on more important issues..."

    *snore*

    Get them out, now.

At some stage, probably the next general election, I'd like to see an amendment to the constitution to stop this happening ever again. (not a lawyer so I don't if this is the best way)

Maybe three months to get a by-election, six months even. Six months is loads of time
Three areas are not fully represented. I couldn't name the favourite candidates in each area, I'm not a local.

But the locals should have a chance to vote

I believe Enda Kenny said that Fine Gael would put forward something along those lines once they are in power. This was a few months back tho after yet another defeat of an attempt to have the writ moved. Hopefully he wasn't just mouthing off and will actually do it.

Do they get to run these again if the result first time around doesn't suit them???

Three months is more than enough for a by election.

Of course now that FF are too scared to go to the bond markets, what's the odds on them calling for a GE next summer just as all the cash runs out and blaming it on the new crowd.

AFAIR Sinn Fein have a constitutional case due in the High Court on this in the next 10 days. I'd say this announcement is a ruse so their case doesn't proceed as the AG can claim that the government has committed itself to holding them, despite not setting a date, or even a provisional one.
