Moving over near here next week with work, just looking at pics from airliners.net, there seems to be only a very few passenger jets flying in(mainly ryanair) but a hell of a lot of different cargo airliners, It must be a very big cargo hub?

Also the Dreamlifter and An225 seem to be regular visitors also.

Edit: Does michael O Leary own the place or what?

Hahn is a former USAF base and when I was last there there were still many of the concrete hardened aircraft shelters as well as other military buildings to be seen. Some have been turned to other commercial or agricultural uses while others are closed up or have been let deteriorate. The airport is owned by Fraport (same as FRA airport) and, as you say, sees mostly cargo operations apart from the Ryanair schedules. I am not aware of any current military facilities there. Not too distant is the aircraft museum at Hermeskeil, which is well worth a visit provided the weather is good, as most exhibits are outdoors. Note that it is open from April to October only. http://www.flugausstellung.de/flugzeuge.html

Not up on the equipment, but was flying out of Hahn a few weeks ago and there was an Aeroflot flight just landed and a couple of cargo aircraft on the apron too. It's not that big an airport, even by FR standards.

Every plane at a stand was a Ryanair plane!

Where is the place with the Lufthansa 747 on the roof?

That's at the Technik Museum in Speyer; with its sister Auto und Technik Museum at Sinsheim it is a must-see in Germany for anyone with an interest in transport, especially aircraft and cars.

Been to the Museum in Sinsheim. The Concorde and russian equivalent on the roof caught my eye when I was driving from Karlsruhe to Ansbach once, so next time I was over, I went for a look.

It's pretty cool, but some of the planes of the roof are just shells, don't even have their cockpits anymore. The Concorde and the russian plane both have fully equipped flight decks. Worth a look if you're in the area. Just make sure Hoffenheim aren't playing at home that day. Makes for a very long trek to get off the autobahn there.

I see on the wiki page that it was sold to the federal state for €1 with €120 million debt so looks like Ryanair aren't being very generous with the landing fees:)

I fly there sometimes when going to Luxemburg - 'tis about 110km driving to Lux and a fair bit more to get to Frankfurt am Main
It's a lot closer to Trier than either of the above.

it's a grand low fares airport. make sure you only try get into schengen in the "any" queue if there are no yanks in the queue, the german immigration are very slow stamping their passports

I did some training in Hahn, posted up quite a few pics on http://www.flickr.com/photos/ant_eidw/page4/

quite a mix of IL76, AN124's, IL86 on occasion along with a steady stream of Evergreen and Polar 747's, Aeroflot have 4 MD11's based there too.

Nice little airport (with a very long runway), bus directly to Frankfurt am Main for €12 or free if your airport staff. Takes about 1hr 20. Decent restaurant called flyer one in the terminal upstairs with a view directly onto the ramp (discount also with airport/airline ID).

If you need temp. accomodation, the B&B hotel at the airport has rooms for €46 a night with free wifi and if your on floor 5 there is a full view of the ramp.

Enjoy Hahn and wrap up for the winter
