Safety & Health at Work - Fetac Level 5

    Hi

I am looking for advice regarding the Fetac Level 5 Course “Safety & Health at Work”.

I am currently working in a food safety / health and safety role, and I don’t have any formal education in this area. I was supposed to be going from training within our organisation (retail environment) but due to a lack of numbers it was cancelled.

I am now trying to find somewhere to do the Safety and Health at Work Fetac module. It was supposed to be run in a local college as an evening course for €290, but this hasn’t gone ahead. I have never done a FETAC course before so I don’t really know much about it.

I am ideally looking to do it over a couple of days, 3, 4 or 5, and as work will be paying I am trying to find a cheaper option. I don’t mind doing it by night, just as long as I don’t have to travel too far.

I rang about 15 places yesterday (went through the list of the fetac website in addition to googling it) and was quoted anywhere from €250 to about €3000 for this module! Am I missing something? Where would there be such massive price differences between them? Have got one company who quoted €250 but they are lacking numbers so waiting until they have enough to run it and they really don’t seem to be sure when this is going to be. I have been quoted all sorts of prices, €899, €695, €1250, €2995 etc etc for what seems to be to be the same course. How could there be such differences in terms of the price?

I am in the Kildare area and called places in Kildare, Dublin, Meath, Louth, Carlow etc as am willing to travel to any of these locations. I really want to get the course done as I do need it for my job and the sooner I do it the better.

I know that it is a minor component that forms part of a major course, and some of the places I called said that they didn’t run it as an individual course but as part of the overall course.

Can anyone tell me why there is such prices differences in what I have been quoted? I feel like I am missing something! Also anyone know of anywhere that run the course for a reasonable price?

    Many thanks!

Prices differ because many of those you contacted are private providers and they are setting their own rates. The local colleges etc have their own pricing structure and dont have to show a profit but have to cover their costs (although many VECs are now looking at getting some profit from the courses). However prices will also differ depending on the lenght of the course and the costs associated with providing it.

Make sure when you sign up for a class that you get the Module Number from the provider and check that against the title with FETAC to make sure that you are doing the right module as there is nothing that prevents providers from changing the name for marketing purposes.

Are you sure that it is the FETAC Safety and Health at Work module you need ? It doesnt carry with it any entitlement to Health and Safety status.

You will have to make your decision on the course but do remember there is no certaintly that by doing the course you will pass and get the module - but it is an easy enough module and you should be ok. I would check with Dublkin city VEC and Co Dublin VEC and see what centres within their VEC offer it and if they do offer it at night. Best of luck.

Thanks a mill for the reply.

I just found that course and figured it would be a good one to go with, I dont need a really formal one, just a basic one for the moment. I havent found any other courses, might do some more digging.

I will contact the people who have quoted €250 and check the module code with them, thanks for the advice. Also will have a look at Dublin VEC, thanks for the advice.

I have a degree and masters so I should be fine, just want to find a suitable course!

    Thanks for your help

Sounds that you need to do a Food Hygience course rather than the general Safety and Health at Work course. Check out the FSAI website

From 1st January 2006 , staff responsible for the development and maintenance of the food business's Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) system must have received adequate training in the application of the HACCP principles.

I have done a course "Food Safety for Managers" already, and am booked into a food safety auditing course in November.

As I am responsible for food safety and health and safety I need to do a course that will cover health and safety including safety statements, manual handling etc etc

I dont think a Fetac level 5 will be sufficient if you are partly responsible for Health and Safety in your place of work and may be money wasted. The course offers only a basic insight into Safety Statements and Manual Handling.

If your employers are paying and are proactive in relation to Helath and safety issues, you may be better off doing a cert as a foundation, perhaps the UCD Cert which is one 1/2 day for school term approx. It may be expensive but it will be money well spent.

I completely agree, I know the food safety course I did was very basis, and I end up doing a lot of research myself anyway.

I would love to do the UCD course, had a look at it and really feel that it would be beneficial, but there is no way that they are going to pay for it. I think about €300 is the max I will get covered!

You could also check out the courses on offer from IBEC or with your local Chamber of Commerce.

Having experience of the FETAC Level 5 module I seriously doubt you will find what you need from it - have you looked at the module/syallbus ?

If you are determined to go down the road of a FETAC course then check out the Level 6 Safety Management module - http://www.fetac.ie/doc/WelcomeServlet?DocId=0901df9e800023f6

Instead of looking for a leaving cert standard fetac 5, look at an IOSH accreditation....

If they are serious about safety they will pay for it, and something for you to bear in mind is that ultimate responsibility for H&S lies with them not you. Explain this to them and perhaps they may be more forthcoming. I would guess that a safety statement for a company as the one you work for could cost anything from €300 - €1,000 depending on the size of the organisation. The Cert will enable you to update such documents as necessary, again another money saver for the company which can be used as a tool by you to gain monetary input from your employers.

BTEI will be running it for free down in Kilrush Co. Clare for a 2nd time next September, it is part of HealthcareSupport Course, ive already done it, and you see we have new students, so it will bhe on for free again, you can phone the Clare VEC about it and theyll see you right.

Healthcare Support in Ennis, in a private college cost 2500 euro, so whos the **** wanna charge 3000 for Safety & Health?
