From www.bbc.co.uk (not sure how to post link):

BMW and Saab-owner Spyker have announced that the German firm will provide engines for the Swedish cars from 2012 onwards.
The four-cylinder 1.6-litre turbo-charged petrol engines will be adapted for Saab's next generation of cars.

Does this mean that in a few years time Saab owners will be advertising their cars for sale as "with BMW engine" as MG Rover owners do?

A real Saab enthusiast would never stoop so low :D

(they are proud of their ancient, fettled with and turbo charged Triumph engine)

At first I was disappointed that Saab was going to head into another generation of 'Brand X in drag' instead of developing its own engines. Then i remembered that a company has to be as wealthy as Dr Evil to develop its own engines, so i calmed down. Then i got to thinking about how the whole 'thinking about car companies according to nationality' thing is really a thing of the past - I mean look at all the suppliers to the 9-5 in the attached:

Then I went for a bath.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

    Engines?

From what I've read, Saab will take on the complete MINI platform including engine, drivetrain, etc. and stick it into a Saab shell with accompanying badge. They probably could not have done any better in bringing to market a new small car :)

That was speculation from a few months ago when details of the potential deal first emerged. I'd imagine the agreement only goes as far as supply of engines for the moment.

This is really good news for SAAB I think. BMW may be many things, but it can't be argued that their engines are usually among the best in the world.

true true. i think the current 3 series 2 litre diesel is churning out 163 bhp with a return of a combined 61mpg - thats incredible really.
