Star Wars 3D

George Lucas is set to release the entire Star Wars saga in 3D. What a disgusting act of greed.

Is there anything to be gained from this for fans? As a fan of Star Wars I will not pay another cent to watch these films in whatever format he releases them, for the rest of my life.

This is absolutely ridiculous....the first three are pants, as if adding the 3D gimmick will make them any better? and although the latter three are classics in their own right - surely they are too old to add 3D to them in any beneficial way?

In fairness to Lucas, these will probably make a ****load of cash.

However, the whole process of reconverting old films to 3D is an exercise in total futility. I've said it once, but I'll say it again: 3D only works when the film was designed that way. Hence, we've had approximately one film where it didn't feel like a gimmick.

Jesus Christ, Lucas is relentless with Star Wars. He really milks the cow until it's atomised! All he does is cling onto former glory to further LucasFilms as a powerhouse in CGI and to dip their toe into the 3D market.

The guy has no limits................oh wait, unless it's just Star Wars then he'll do everything that's marketly possible.

Give it up, George, you had your moment over 2 decades ago.

Converting a 2D film to 3D is pointless - it costs millions (something like $100,000 per minute of film) and the end result looks rubbish.

If its not shot in 3D then the stereoscopic information just isn't there.

I wonder will he tho? I'm a big fan of the series (even the prequels to a lesser extent) and would usually get excited by news of this nature. However this time I'm seriously underwhelmed by this news and in all honesty I can't see myself bothering to go see these movies this time around.

I'm the same - this is just blatant cashing-in. No doubt the blu ray version of the films will follow when people have spent money on the 3D release. The money is obviously there or be made but I just hope the 3D fad has died down by the time these get (a no doubt staggered) release.

I'll never specifically go to see another '3D film' that was not conceived and shot using 3D technology - the post-production addition of 3D to Toy Story added absolutely nothing to what was a great film otherwise.

I don't personally give a crap about how much money Lucas makes, I like Star Wars, so I'm going to go see them in 3D, who the money goes to is irrelevant to me.

My god I must have dreamed it but I remember George saying nearing the Prequel Trilogy's completion that he looked forward to making smaller, more personal movies. I guess raping the Indian Jones franchise and further screwing with Star Wars counts as "smaller" & "personal".

Don't worry, this is just a precussor to American Graffiti 3D.

To be honest, the fact that 3D is being shoe-horned into Star Wars makes me want to see them even less than if they just shat them back into the theatres in the format they're already in. The special editions of the original trilogy are terrible. I love the original trilogy, but the new effects are largely glaringly obvious and the editorial decisions are so bad they make me want to vomit out my eyes. The less said about the prequel trilogy, the better.

Gimmick. To hell with George Lucas. I'll stick with the DVDs of the laserdisc editions that I got off ebay, thank you very much.

Wouldn't mind seeing ANH & ROTS just for curiourisity. Would have been a better idea if he did a 3D animated 20 year later revisit to the characters with the original voices where possible. Finish off the story as it were.

As long as the audience are there Lucas will continue to cash in. I don't mind the re-releases in the cinema every so often as its good to see them on the big screen. Not too sure about the 3D, as it was already said, it just doesnt work unless it was intended to be part of the movie from the begining.

I can just imagine when The Lord of The Rings trilogy gets the 3D treatment, followed by the 3D special edition release.

He had a blank canvas, and the most advanced effects technology ever and what did we get?

I might, might, go see Star Wars: A New Hope, mainly to see the trench run in 3D, if people are saying nice things about the conversion. I kind of doubt it.

will this mean that the 3-D chess game and the 3-D Skyping they have in Star Wars will look real now? ;)

Well i've at least 18 months to decide so i might go see 'em. I'd say the Prequel trilogy would look great in 3D, since they're pretty much all CGI anway.

I'll wait to see what other people say about it before plonking down the cash. That said I saw 2 3D films last week and I'm really getting sick of 3D. I'll need time away from 3D...

Give it a rest George. Seriously. 3D wont improve any of the films or add anything to it. In fact if anything, 3D will only serve to take away from the original trilogy.

I'm just waiting for the day Lucas announces his intentions to remale/reboot the original trilogy.
Let's be honest, it's very much in the realms of possibility.

    It's pseudo 3D, meh.

They'd be better off making some new movies (Without Lucas obviously). I'd love to see for instance what Neil Blomkamp or Alfonso Cuarón would do with Star Wars.

God knows there's no shortage of great material out there and the bar is pretty low after eps I, II & III - None of us would live long enough to read everything on Wookieepedia (80,000+ articles). The wider franchise is blessed with a wealth of incredibly interesting places and strong characters yet unexplored.

I'll go see The Empire Strikes Back purely for the chase through the asteroid field. Anyone accusing Lucas of cashing in is pointing out the glaringly obvious: he knows how to make money, and he does so with amazing proficiency.

Also, OT, he is donating half his wealth to charity upon his death. So more power to him.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,966 ✭✭✭✭syklops

Yeah, I'd go and see Empire if it came out. Even if the 3d sucked, it would still be Empire on a big screen.

I dont understand why he doesnt do a few more movies. I would have thought it easier to write and film a few more flicks than it is to hack 3d into a movie that came out around 30 years ago.

Even a synical ass-raping of the franchise like "Obi-Wan: The early years" would attract people to the cinema. You could write it in a weekend, film it in about 2 weeks, and then let the dollars come in. I think he has lost his imagination.

No it wouldn't. It'd be a horribly and unnecessarily butchered version of Empire.

I'd go and see the original trilogy, un-doctored, on the big screen in a heartbeat. A shame they obviously don't think many others would, and instead feel the need to faff about adding the latest whizzy tech to an already damn-near-perfect set of films.

    Boo-urns!

dont see the problem personally, if it turns out well then great! if it turns out crap it will only solidify the love for the original series

its not like anybody is being forced to pay and go see it and it wont change the original 3 movies that we presumably have on our dvd shelves in any way

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 22,693 CMod ✭✭✭✭Sad Professor

Nice. Lucas is prepared to spend tens of millions of dollars converting all six films to some fad format that will probably be dead (again) before all six films have been released, but he won't spend the 1 million dollars or so that it would cost to restore the original trilogy.

Instead of releasing all 6 over a 6 year period, just release the original trilgy over a summer/xmas period like the 97 special editions. Its ANH's 35th anniversary in 2 years, perfect oppurtunity to do it. Although the geek in me does want to see the trench run and the end of ROTJ in 3D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,013 ✭✭✭✭jaykhunter

Lucas wouldn't keep re-releasing all of his movies if we (and by we I mean Star Wars fans) wouldn't keep paying to see it again and again.

I bet when Ep I 3D comes out we'll all see it because
    - We're all huge Star Wars fans
    - We could give Ep I another "chance" [maybe it's less crap with the distracting 3D]
    - We're curious

I imagine I-III would look much better in 3D than IV-VI.

id go to see any of the original first three star wars movies again in a heartbeat, 3d or whatever, i love them! :D
but the phantom menace and the ones after that, i never ever liked them, thats just me though, im a very dont mess with the classics/originals type of person.

on that note, when are they bringing out the first three star wars again for the 3d thing, if they are, does anyone know :)

Darth Maul is such a waste of a really cool bad guy. He is just in it for about 5 mins. What made Star Wars really good wasnt Luke Skywalker or Leia, it was the baddies esp. Darth Vader and the Emperor.

The Phantom Menace really is a bad film with some awful characters such as JarJarBiggs or whatever hes called. Attack of the Clones was bad but not as bad. I really enjoyed Revenge of the Sith though as it went back to its roots and concentrated on the Dark Side a lot more.

That said im a sucker for Star Wars so i will prob go and see it and hate myself half way through it for being such a sucker again.

I'd imagine that they are going to be huge, they are the logical conclusion of where Hollywood is heading surely? Infantile films with no character development, no believable human interaction, storylines you could fit on a beermat and moronic, meaningless dialogue with just endless cgi and 3d gimmickry to offer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,698 ✭✭✭✭Princess Peach

I'm going to go this weekend to the Phantom Menace I think.

I'm a sell out and want to see how good the 3D is.

Also I'm a bit OCD in that if I'm going to see any of them, I need to see all of them if you get me. Sequence needs to be complete :pac:

When I got the Blu-Ray I went for the 6 film version as I'd decided to rewatch it from the start in chronological order. I planned to do so over a weekend but it took close to two weeks to watch them all, the Phantom Menace is just soul suckingly crap. Scene after scene of atrocious dialogue about trade routes, dreadful CGI, poor performances and no real action. It felt like someone had found a way to sap all the fun out of an adventure film so that they could be used to torture prisoners. Attack of the Clones was even worse, Jesus it's a woeful piece of cinema with the mode inane and down right insulting dialogue you'll ever hear. The final part of the second trilogy is a step up but far from a great film. All of Lucas's trademarks are there, poor dialogue, stilted action and a reliance on exposition in order to get to the next scene.

I'm hoping that this rerelease flops, 3D is a tool that many film makers can use to help tell a story but with Lucas it's all about squeezing the last buck out of his franchise. I'd much rather go see Journey 2 as there at least is a film made to entertain through the spectacle of 3D.

thats the catch, there gonna convert them one at a time so if they feel they make enough cash off the first one theyll convert the next one and so on and so on,

so seeing as it made a million dollars at the midnight showing in the US id probably expect part two to be out in glourious 3D soon :D

Not really, if anything this is just a petty money making scheme that utilizes new technology to squeeze another buck out of a tired franchise. No matter how good the 3D is all it will do is highlight just how 2D every other aspect of the film is. Had Lucas gone out and made another entry in the series in 3D then I would wish him well but this is just another in his notorious re-releases that exists solely to make money.

You're not considering the fact that it's a kids movie, and kids absolutely love the prequels. The original trilogy , even remastered look as old and as boring to them as the original series of star trek. To millions of kids, the phantom menace IS star wars!

I have in the past defended the film from some of the more vocal critics on here and have criticized the original series for having many of the same failings of the prequels but they are not kids films. Kids go to the cinema to be entertained by spectacle, they want action, explosions, one liners, everything that say a film such as Journey 2 has in spades.

They do not go to the cinema to see a film about trade dispute and taxation arguments. I saw the films when they first came out, would have been 12 or 13 and even then I was bored senseless by the terrible plot and woeful dialogue. I tried to show the films to my younger brothers who are 4 and 8 when the Blu came out and they hated the prequels. My 4 year old brother liked Yoda and the 8 year old liked Darth Maul but they were just bored with the rest of the film.
