Private Secondary School Teachers

I was just wondering whether or not private secondary school teachers in Ireland get paid more than those employed by the department of education, and if so is it a little more, a good bit more, or substantially more?

It's for a piece of writing that I'm doing, so a basic answer is all I need really. Thanks in advance :D

I work in a private school on a per hour basis for indefinite duration. I get paid three euro more per hour than if I was a casual part-time teacher in a state school. However, it would work out that I'd be much better off over the course of the year (and longer term) if I was a regular part time teacher in a state school.

It also might help to know that all of us are always looking for jobs in 'real' schools!

Bear in mind that in some "Private schools", the teachers are still paid by the department of Education so in that case, their wages are no different to those who are in non-private schools. These schools are deemed as private because you pay a fee to attend there, but your tuition is paid for (can seem controversial I suppose).

But if you're talking about schools where the teachers are paid privately, then ultimately the department teachers are better off (not just wages-wise, I'd imagine there are condition issues too, like pensions etc). I don't know official figures other than that though, sorry!!

Do you mean a Fee Paying School or a 'Grind' School?

See this months ASTI newsletter if your talking about a fee paying school, pg.43

There was a case taken against a 'private' school for paying 'privately' employed teachers LESS than DES rate ... generally these schools are obliged to pay same.

I think a clear distinction should be made as the 2 terms; Private and Fee Paying are often confused.

Private School = school that receives NO money from the state... typical example would be 'Grind' schools that are totally self financed.

Fee Paying School = School part financed by the state for a set quota of teachers (not the same pupil teacher ratio allowance as a 'normal' school).

If it's a grind/private school then defo... you should get wayyy more money!!

I worked in a private school. HATED it. Goes against everything I wanted. Plus as already stated, I wanted a job in a different school. I got paid far less, it was run as a business, that was all he cared about!

Just be careful not to make a sweeping generalisation about pay for teachers in private schools. I'm sure it's a little different from school to school. I know of one fee paying school that has some privately paid teachers who were employed on 10 month contracts, so they didn't get paid for the summer. Have no idea what rate they were on though.
