**Note to mods: I know this is specific and almost like a teams plug but I would appreciate this being left on the main sub for the moment if possible as it will be buried elsewhere**

Ok here goes. We've had several threads on college airsoft before and I think its time Trinity had an Airsoft Soc/Club(More on the difference later). Being a JF there is no way I'm touching this by myself, nor I doubt would I have much sway with the powers that be. This is a testing the water thread(I know, I know) really. Before looking at getting numbers from the 17,000 students we'd need a team of, by my estimation, at least 5 current players and students. And not all JFs like me either. If anyone fits this profile please pipe up! Or if you know somebody who does please send them this way.

I'm going to pre-empt the question "why" because thats something thats going to have to be answered when applying anyway.
    • Chance to socialise with other players of a similar agegroup and occupation
    • Chance to introduce new players
    • Intervarsity Skirmishes/Comps
    • Subsidised/Funded Skirmishes
    • Possible weekenders(The Mall anyone?)
    • Bulk Purchasing
    • Club/Soc gear
    • Debriefings in The Pav
    • Chance to steal members from the sinful and moronic DUPBSS
    • Room/Workshop in a few years if we were to be really lucky

All this is adventurous but I think achievable. Socs in other colleges have had good signup rates in the past(will be enquiring with them for advice and stats) when they appeared in gear, which surprisingly didnt seem to be an issue. I know last week the PBSS lads had markers all over the front square so hopefully TCD would allow us too.

There is a question though as to go for Soc status or Sports club status. The paintballers are a soc, but in general it seems to me that the sports clubs get more funding. If DUCAC would have us that might be the way to go, otherwise its the CSC. Their rules are online and I've reproduced the important bits below.

So, any TCD heads around? I believe The Joker is one:)
    Lethal.

    CSC Rules:

    1. ELIGIBILITY
The C.S.C. allocates grants to recognised societies and to societies which have been granted provisional recognition and to societies that have been granted associative recognition.

    2. RECOGNITION OF NEW SOCIETIES

    2.1
If a group of students wish to form a new society, it may make application to the CSC Executive Committee. The group may be given associative or provisional recognition so long as –
It has 100 or more signatures in support of the application. College ID numbers should accompany the signatures for verification purposes. Signatories must be capitated students of the University of Dublin.
A constitution and statement of aims is produced and is satisfactory to the Executive. The constitution must be democratic with proper financial controls. The principal aims of the society must not already be covered in the aims of any recognised society or capitated body or group thereof.
It satisfies the Executive that the society is likely to make a long-term contribution to student life in College and to continue on an on-going basis.
In the implementation of Art. 11(1)ii of the CSC Constitution, the Executive does not regard as likely to make a long-term contribution to student life in College, groups, whose sole or primary aim is, in its opinion, a clearly achievable short-term goal.

The society then becomes eligible to receive certain grants subject to the restriction as laid down in section 12. Associative or Provisional societies cannot vote at general meetings of the CSC. A provisionally recognised society is deemed fully recognised on passage of a motion for such recognition at an Annual General Meeting of the CSC.

    2.2
Before the CSC Executive proposes a motion to grant full recognition to a society it must receive and approve
A secretary’s report detailing the activities and achievements of the society during its period of provisional recognition.
Satisfactory accounts of the income and expenditure incurred for at least one financial year, (1 April – 31 March), and in any case from the date of official provisional recognition.
An up-to-date copy of the society’s constitution with a memorandum drawing the attention of the Executive to any changes made since provisional recognition was granted. Such changes, as with all constitution changes, are only valid if they have been previously ratified by the Executive of the CSC.
Evidence showing the society to have 50 or more fully paid up members who are capitated students.
If it is satisfied with these submissions and feels that all the reasons for provisional recognition still hold, then the Executive may recommend the society for full recognition.

    2.3
The Capitation Committee is notified of any recognitions for information purposes and the College Secretary is informed so that newly recognised societies may be included in the College Calendar.

    3. MEMBERSHIP OF SOCIETIES

    3.1
Societies must be open to all capitated students for a membership fee of not more than €6.50 per capita per annum and not less that €1.00 per capita per annum. Membership fees falling outside this range must be approved by the Executive and such approval will only be given in exceptional circumstances.

    3.2
All College staff should be allowed to join College Societies. Their membership status and subscription level should be decided by the society.

I had a thread last year about this, there were a good few people interested.

I am now in second year and would still be keen.

I'm can't speak for TCD, but over in DCU we are a soc because of funding. You would want to find out what exactly TCD will give a club and soc grants for. In DCU for example we can get grants for trips but just a small abount of equipment, face masks etc.. ( meaning we can offer cheap trips to sites that offer rentals etc.. ) while a club would get funding for gear but not for many trips. Either way you will want to talk to somebody about what you can get funded for.

The major differences between Airsoft and Paintball socs are a) everybody knows what paintball is, and that it's pretty safe. and b) paintball doesn't look realistic. Campus security aren't going to like you running about with your AK or whatever. You will want to have a talk with them before you bring anything on campus.

We did a bit of "advertising" during the freshers introduction week, turned up in gear ( Having informed campus security beforehand ), showed off and explained the sport to those who didn't know what it was, and the response was really surprising. Loads of people seem to be in the situation of knowing about the sport but never having had the oppertunity to play, and all seemed really intrested in joining as well as a number of current players.

    Thats two :)

Will dig up that thread tomorrow when I have some time.

Funding is allocated annually based on member count(relative) but you can also get special grants for specific purchases, eg: Netsoc got money for a new server last year in addition to their normal budget.

The gear thing is minor IMO, maybe a bulk buy of 20X BDUs for a TCD selected pattern(I vote Swedish M90 :p) but thats it. Trips would be the thing to go for. With group rates and subsidies from the college we could organise really affordable airsoft.

    Thanks for the input lads.

ok so what would setting up this society entail?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,170 ✭✭✭✭ED E

100 Signatures + 50 Active members + The CSC not lobbing us in with the scum.

What I dont know is when one gets the signatures/members, freshers can hardly work for new socs. Might email the CSC and ask. We cant put up posters as we dont have a college/soc logo to use.

I wasnt clear, I meant freshers week.

If we start it we're the committee by default I assume, until then I dunno what we'd call ourselves.

If I get this bloody project done I'll send that email to the CSC.

Currently enrolled in an MSc course so I'm not sure if I'll be able in a position to help. None the less, I'm glad someone is willing to put in the effort necessary to set up such an airsoft society as TCD would be remiss to be without one.

    Best of luck :)

@Ironwolf any one can work for a society regardless of their year so if u wanna help just keep an eye on this thread!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,170 ✭✭✭✭ED E

In contact. Sounds like we'll need volunteers to man a table in Hamilton or Arts. Maybe we can pop up projector onto a wall.....

    More later.

have the committee replied yet? also not sure if having the guns on show is really a good idea!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 660 ✭✭✭AR-Mad

For a start (besides talking to the committee), it would be cool to get the TCD members on this forum to meet up and discuss the airsoft situation here. Having a few games to start would be great.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,170 ✭✭✭✭ED E

The CSC want us to work something out with the paintballers, but no reply from them. Will ask the CSC for a phone number. Maybe if they're dead in the water we could get set up independently.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 660 ✭✭✭AR-Mad

Fair enough. If you don't hear from them a meet up would be good. Also if we do join up with them or get committee money of any sort. Does that go toward games or gear because the paintball soc provides gear but we tend to have our own. Also the thought of skirmishing in Hamilton is somewhat extremely intruiging.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,170 ✭✭✭✭ED E

I would hope that we could get a set of loadouts but I think we'd start with some subsidised outings.

there is no way we would be able to play in the hamilton it would be awesome but we would never be allowed!!!! If we even just got a set of camo for each member then that would make us look like a proper team which would be awesome!! Hopefully the paintball soc is dead in the water so we can take over!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 660 ✭✭✭AR-Mad

agreed and the hamilton thing is just a fantasy-dream-will-not-ever-happen daydream:D. The subsidised outing is a fantastic idea as airsoft guns and gear is quite steep in cost to acquire though it is easier to do so than paintball. More importantly our selling point could be that we won't require as much money from the committee as the paintball soc. If you type 'operation irene airsoft gi' into youtube there is a college in US that has an airsoft soc set up and they get funds to attend huge ops like operation irene.

In terms of the CSC they love community and teamwork from what I hear, and this would fit the bill perfectly I'd say.

I've got a mad week this week and will have classwork(seen people with vintage black suitcases in the hamilton and lloyd?) over the weekend but I'll get on this on monday.
